If Abraham were juf ifled by works , he hath whe- reofto glory . shall the meaning be , Abraham war not fuflified by fuch worl¿r, it give ground of gloriation ? then the moaning lyeth not in the words , but the words do exprefly croffe & contradiá that fenfe , unlefs we shall fuppo- 'fe them to have no fenfe : to fpeak no hing of the following verf. 3. where beleeving is mentioned , & not another fort of works , to wit , fuch as give no ground or occafion of boaffíng, which in this cafe of juftification , no man can defcribe unto us, or .tell us what they are. He tels us p. 122, that the meaning of thefe words Ipm, 3: 2S. Thereforerre conclude &c. is no more but this , vìß, That a man it juf ifìed in theGojpei tray But not only is that in the general included ; but that Gofpel -way is particu- larly exprefled, to be by faith without the deeds- of the Law : And confequent- ly. his Popish , & Socinian way is diametrically oppofice to the Gofpel - way. He goeth about to explaine to us p.124. &c. what is weaned by their own Righteoufnefs , that is fo frequently fet in oppofition to the ljightooufnefs of God, & tels us , that it was fo called upon a threefold account. i. Becaufe they fought the pardon of their fins by theta own Sacrificer. Anf, And why not allo by their works of Obedience ? Sure . neither Abraham , nor David fòught for par- don upon any fuck accout, & they renunced other works, than thefe. Is that all the Righteoufnefs that Paul renunceth Phil. r: 9 ? Was he then oc- cupied about Sacrifices ? Some thing elfe lure is under-flood, 1. Cor. 4:4. 2. Becaufe ( faith he ) they did not think Regeneration , or Supernatural grace tteceffary to the obtaining of it. Arf. And truely, all the Regeneratión & Su- pernatural grace , which be thinks neceffary , is but that a Pelagian ,- efuite & Arminian will think necefiary, & no more, as we law above. But doth he think, that Abraham, or David had any fuch apprehenfions ? & yet even their works are excluded from juflification. Was that the Righteòufnefs that Paul called his owne Phil. 3.: 9 ? 1 think for shame he will not fay it. And what meaneth Paul to fay t. Cor. 4: 4. I knew nothing by my fel f, yet am I not hereby jufiified, . This fare, mutt include works done by fupernatural Graeae ; & after Regeneration. 3. Saith he. Becaufe it was a way of feeking to be ju fli fled of their own devi- fsng, d? not of God's appointing. Anf, This is very true, but it is not the who le trutlhïn this matter : And his way is of the fame Nature, no more confi- ftent with the Gofpel methode of jullification, through the Righteòufnefs of God by faith, than theirs is; for the Imputed Righteoufnefsof Chrift he reje&eth with contempt : True ju(tification he is ignorant of; He kno- weth no Faith, but what is Popish & Socinian. His New Covenant is but a new edition of the old. His Regeneration is Pelagian. His Good Works are but works flowing from a Principle of Nature , aided with a common di- vine affifiancea Let us now in end hear, what is the refult of all his difcourfe. It is toshew; That they were the works of the Law, as exclufrve of Faith in Chriß, ¿e his death : 1 notthefè, which are the immediat Teets of Faith in Chrift, in bis death (1.-1' in bit
