But the Gofpel tels us , that in the matter of Juftification , all the works, of the Law, are exclufrve of faith in Chrift, even Abraham's works David's works : & Paul's works; & therefore they were all laid afi- de, & jollification was only looked for through Faith. Thus we have Peen, what a Gofpel this is , which Mr. Baxter recommen- deth to us , the confederation whereof may move force to fay. No fcitur ex focio, qui non dignofcitur ex, fe. C H A.P. XXXII. Of the objeet of juflifying Faith. THough fomething of the Objet of Faith was hinted before Chap. XX. when we were fpeaking of the Nature of Faith : yet it will not be arnifl'e, to fpeak a little more of is here, both in reference to what followeth ; and alto, & more particularly in order to the better underftan- ding of, what it is to Live by Faith. In order therefore to the explaining of this Objet, we would premit the - fe fewthings. I. As was mentioned in the forecited place, there is prefuppofed unto the right exercife, & actual exerting of Faith , accepting the offered Saviour & Salvation through him , a Convittonof fin & mifery , in one meafure or other , whereby the Sinner is brought toa defparingin himfelf, feing he can finde no remedie or reliefe for himfelf, within himfelf , and ro a concluding, that he is an undone man , if there be no other remedie, than what he is able to do for himfelf : for after all meanes affayed ( and a foul in that cafe is ready to turn to many hands, to Peek reliefe, & until preven- ting grace come , will embrace .& dole with any promifing wey , how char - gable & troublefome fo ever it be, ere it fweetiv comply with the only Man - abating & Grace - exalting way of Salvation, through Faith in Chrift, re- vealed in the Gofpel) hefindeth himfelf difappointed. And further, it is prefuppofed , as necefl'arily requìfite hereunto, force knowledge of the grounds of Religion; & particularly of the Gofpel, of Chrifl, of his offi- ces, Work &c. all revealed in the Gofpel. 2. When we fpeak here of the Objet of Faith we mean that Faith, by which a Soul is united unto Chrift , & clofeth with Him , as offered in the Gofpel, & improveth Him ro all ends & ufes, which their cafe & necef fitie , in all time coming, calleth for. So that it is one & the fame Faith , whether it be called Uniting Faith, Saving Faith, Juftifying Faith, San - difying & heart - purifying "Faith, or the like. It is one & the fame radical grace, receiving thefe or the like various denominations, from the etfe6ts brought about by ir, or the féveral ends & ufes it bath, & is appointed for. And the fame Faith bringeth all thefe effects about, in its way, according to the Order, Méthode & meafure , ordained of God : the fame Faith , B b b 3 whereby
