9t `Ob etE of u i in Faith. x P. 3z The f fy i s whereby the beleever is Married to Chrift , & Covenanteth with Him, as Headi, Husband , Lord & Saviour , by the fame is he ¡unified , adopted & brought intoa Rate of Peace & Reconciliation with God. By the fame Faith alto doth the man get his heart Purified , &!he liveth the life of Sane' dification. By the fame alto he getteth Strength , Reviving Comfort., .& Support in times of Temptation & Trial. So that the Beleevers life firft & laft is by Faith , the beginning, progrefs , all the fleps of it, &.final Salva- tion is by Faith; whence it is called Saving Faith , to diftinguish it from that Hiftoiical Faith , which , ( though true in its kind yet ) is not from the faving grace of God , tior hath it etfeóls accompanying Salvation. ;. Though this Faith be one & the fame , by which the Beleever liveth Pita & lati; and which proverb ferviceable & ufefulto him , on all occalons, ,& to all ends &ufes, that his feveral neflïties call for : Yet in reference to thefe various ends & ufes,, it aáteth net after one & the fame manner , all points : Faith aterh not every way ., after one & the fame manner, in order to get Strength for Duties , that it a,fteth , in order ro.get Sin Pardo - ned : It að not the fame way frir Subdueing the reigning power of fin, that it aaeth for 'unification, nor doth it at the fame way for Comfo, t and upholding ítrength in a day of trial , that it a te.th , in order to ¡unifica- tion; And yet we need not fay , that it a teth diftinátly & differently , ac- cording to every diftinálbenefite, and bleffing, that is had thereby: The dif- ferent natures of the nece.flìries we ftand into, with the different wayes of the Lord's communicatingwhat we ftand in needrof , according to the va- rious Relations he ftandeth in , & various offices he bath taken oq, in refe- rence to his peoples good , may fatisfie us herein , & according as thefe feveral particular neceffities may come under one head, & reliefe may be conveyed to them after one & the fame manner : Ml which will he ben .difcerned by the underftandingCh iftian , in his application to Chrift , ac- cording to his Condition & wants, which he would have helped .& ftp- plied. 4. Hence, though.the Principal Obje.at of thisFaith be alway.es one and the fame; Yet there may be force peculiarities in that obje.df , which Faith eyeth more in one cafe , than in another : As we finde the Saints, in their adreffes to. God , in their feveral ftraits & neceffities, fometimes pitching upon one attribute of God , fometimes upon another; according as the- reby Faith prefented God to the foul in a fura'binefs to the prefent cafe it was in ; and fo when difpenfations feemed to croffe the promifes , Faith eyed God as Faithful & Unchangable ; when enemies appeared prong , difficul- ties invincible , and the like , Faith took hold on God , as the Almighty, to whom nothing wasimpoffible; tit when fin appeared as a difcouragment to drive them from their hopes, Faith took hold of the mercyof God &c. So when a poor finner is under the conviaions of fin & threatnings of the L>w , Faith muff take up Chrift in a futablenefs thereto & eye fomething in Him, that peculiarly fuiteth that cafe ; & when againe thé beleever bath need of Light , Inftruátion, Strength, Comfort , Throwbearing & the like, he fixeth hiseye on fume thing in Chriff , that fuiteth that particular pecelli- 4,
