The Object of 7ufttfying Faith; neceffity and fo Faith atteth accordingly t And thus, though the objed- remaine the fame, and chilli be alwayes made ufe of; Yet Faith may and doth at more immediatly on Chrift,- as Prophet , when in one cafe where- unto this office carrieth a refpeEt ; and at another time more immediatly & direétly on Chrift,, as a King , when the prefent necefïiry calleth for help from Chrift as King ; & againe faith aéteth on him , as a Prielt ,. when only that, which Chrift as a Prieft did,. can anfwere their prefent neceflitie. Yet , ( which is carefully to be obferved , to prevent Mr. Baxter's challen- ge) I do not fay, nor fee I airy neceflìty to fay , that thefe feveral ads of Faith, areas fo many feveral Conditions unto the receiving of the feveral favours, taking the terme Condition in his fenfe ; I do not fay , that Faith aéting one way on Chrift is a proper Condition of Juflificatiorr, & .Faith as aaing another way on Chrift is the proper Condition of Adoption, & that Faith aEti ng a third way on Chrift is the proper Condition-of San tification &c. but that, as the effeéts & benefites , which finners (land in need of , are afcribed unto leveral effectuating alts of Chrift, & to the feveral Relations & offices he,hath taken on ; foFaith in order to the receiving of thefe bene -- fires , a&teth fuirably on Chrift, & the Beleever is, taught fo to do by the 'Spirit of the Lord , to his Comfort ,- Hope & Encouragment. e. I prefuppofe here the Formal ObjeEtof all divine faith,, which is the' Truth & Veracity of God; for all divine faith giveth credite unto divine` .",ti Revelations upon the Credíte . the Truth & Veracity of the Revealer, Thu . faitb the Lord, who is true, & who is Truth itfelf, is the foie Formal ground 2 & Ratio of this Faith. d. I prefuppofe here all() that Comprehenfive Material ObjeEtof all cfíVi ne Faith , which is the whole will & mind ofGod, concerning whatfbm- ever thing it be revealed, whether by the Scriptures , or by the Light of pei, Nature. It the Truth & Veracity of God be the only Formal Ground' of this Faith , then all that th ?s God revealeth mutt be beleeved & received , asÌt true , when known to be revealed by Him. By fairh we underhand , that the" worlds wore framed by the word of God. Heb. t t: 3 & we beleeve all things which are written in the Law dJ the Prophets Ai. 24: 14. Yea &in the whole word of God :- I do not here determine , what particular. Truthes, revea- led in the wórd , are neceffarily to be exprefly & explicitly beleeved, by every one , that bath a true Saving Faith , & what not : only this I fay, that' many particular truthes, are revealed, whereofa true Beleever may be igno rant , & yet have a true Saving Faith , receiving all , which he knoweth -t be revealed by the Lord , & re)ecting no one- Truth whatfomever,<<that he knoweth to be revealed. But we are here to (peak of that Object- of Faith , which immediatly &J directly concerneth our delivery from oar natural Rate of fin and miferie; and our eternal Salvation : And this , we judge , to be whole Chrifle fus ,., as he is hold forth' and revealed in theGGofpel. We fay Chrift Jefus (t) wholly , and ()'as ham, is held forth and revealed in the GofpelL And both thefe , for explications fake, . may be branched our in feverai par:- titulars$ Uay
