C H A P. 32 . The ObjeCI of yuffifying Faith. 397 faith , whereby beleevers become Jutlified, Adopted , Sanctified, 8z shall be at length finally Saved for they 5.hall receive the end of their faith , the Salvation of their fouls a., Pet. i s 9. yet to prevent miftakes , we would ad- de fome few confiderations. z. By all this , we do not meane , that all thefe Objets, or Various parts or Corìfiderations of the one adequate & compleet Objet , are exprefly and ditlinEtly conceived & laid hold on by every Beleever, when they at faith on Chritt, orcome.unto God through him , according to the Gofpel com mand : But that thefe things belong to the full Objeát of Saving faith , and are implied therein ; fo that whoever beleeve h. favingly , beleeveth thefe feveral truthes , according to the meafure of the Revelation of mod , and of their Capacity & Information. So that a mote full & explicite beleefe of thefe particulars is now required under the Gofpel , than was required un- der the Old Teflament, when this Revelation was not fo full and plaine , as now : and more is required of filch , who have had cleay-íntormation of Gofpel truthes; than of others, who have wanted that Advantage : and more alto is required of fueh , as have large Capacities & Understandings, than of others who are more Rude & of a narrower Reach. 2. W herever any of thefe truthes are rightly bele.ved, and heartily clo- fed with , all the reft are implicitly alfo received ; for they cannot be fepara -. ted ; the whole contrivance isfuch a noble piece of divine art & of infinite wifdom , that all the feveral pieces , are indiffolubly knit together: Hence what ever piece it be, that the beleever firff doth directly & explicitly dole with , or under whatfoever notion Chrift at firfl be embraced according us the beleever cometh to more diftind apprehenfions of other pieces or parts of this contrivance , fo his heart complyeth with, and he cordially embra- ceth the tame. 3. We may be hereby helped to underfand , the feveral and various ex- prellìons tired in Scripture, to pointe forth faith , acting on its object; forj, however thefe be not aiwayes one and the fame , but different; yet the fame whole objet} is implicitly underflood ; and thefe particulars , exprefly men- tioned , mull not be confidered abftradly , or alone; but according to their feveral place in the grand defigne, and with refpectthereto; as when the object of faith is Paid ro be He, who jußifieth th.e ungodly Rom. 4: 5. and to be Him, who railed up Jefus our Lord from the dead verf. 24,. and in that fame Chap. the object of Abraham's faith , whereby he was juflrfied, is the Pro - mile, that God would make him a Father of many Nations &c. verf. 170[8, &c. all thefe muff be contìdered with refpect unto Chfift , the grand medium, who was appointed to be a Saviour to all Nations, and was to d ie & rife a- ,F"k gaine, after'fatisfadion made to Juftice , and in and through whom alone God will Juftifie the poor finner, that is ungodly in himfelf. With referen.- ce hereunto mutt we underhand the Publicans Paying , God be merciful tome, a firmer and the faints under the O1dTeflarn. their to frequent fleeing to the Grace , Mercy & Bounty of God ; for all this was with refped to the only Soveraigne way, that the Lord had condefcended upon, whereby to shear forth, and manifeh , his Mercy & Goodnefs & Grace to finners.
