C H A P. 33. Chr j's Righteoufnefs the Objeet of Faith. and accepted of God , as a compleat & Satisfadlory Righteoufnefs, they by faith coming to be united unto Chrifl ( according to the way & metho- I de, which the Lord bath wifely condefcended upon ) have an interefi in that Satisfadiory Righteoufnefs, as legally made over unto them and the- refore have the benefices purchafed thereby ; as when a firanger, who was ?, not under the Obligation , comet h to pay the debt ofa debtor lying in pri- fon , the payment nauft in Law fenfe be made, and accounted the debtors, or put upon his fcore , and received upon his account , ere he can therefore be relieved out of Prifon. But in the fore -cited place againft Mr. Blake he maketh this Righteoufnefs & Remiffion all one thing 2 And indeed if it were fo , it could not belong to the Objet of Faith , other wages , than as an end , intended to be obtained thereby. But to us Remiffion is a benefite purchafed by this Righteoufnefs and followeth upor our having intere( therein through Faith , according to `w the appointment of God : a Pardoned man , as fuck, is not a Righteous man. But he tels us there , that our divines of the A(Jembly do perfectly define jußifying Faith to be a receiving & re(ling on Chrifi alone forSalvation , as he is of- ferett in the Gofpel. It it of dangerous confequence to define juflifying faith to be the receiving of jufiifiçation, or kighteoufniefs. Anf. Here we have Juftifi- cation & Righteoufnefs made óne and the fame, which with me , diner as Caufe & Effedl;our divines of the Afl'embly give a more full definition or de -':' fcription of Ju(titying Faith , in the Larger Catechifine, and there tell us, * t{ that thereby the convinced finnerreceiveth d5 refieth upon Chrifi , d5 ( N. B. ) t ' his Righteoufnefs therein (i. e. in the Gofpel ) held forth , for pardon of fin, d5" for the accepting e accounting of his perfon Righteous to the fight of God for Salva- tion. And if Mr. Baxter would fay fo much , as is here , this debate would a¢ beat an end , and yet I finde not this among his exceptions, againfi that Cap- z techifme , in his Confeffion. And when our devines mentione this Receiving & Resting upon Chri(t's Righteoufnefs , they make not jufüfying Faith to be a receiving of jollification ; but the one a caufe of the other : And he addeth a little thereafter, ( which is confiderable to our prefent purpofe ) That re- ceptio Ethica adiva of iußification, or of Righteoufnefs (tor they are both one thing with him) goeth before Jußiication, as a fmall d9 fecondary part of condition, it being the accepting of Chrifi himfelf, that is themaine condition : And we never fpuke of the receiving by Faith of Chriti's Righteoufnefs as 46 exclufive of the receiving of himfelf. He tels us next. ThatChriß's Saris- fadion or Redemption ( folvendo pretium ) if merit , cannot properly be recci- ved by us; for they are not in themfelver given to us. X' e grant the price was payed to God but it being payed to God for us , it may be imputed to us,. and reckoned upon our fcore and we may that way receive it by faith , and Lean our foul upon ix , to the end , that the fruit of it may be given to us. And likewife he granteth ibid. that jußifyin_g faith doth as neceffärily refpet Chriß's fatirfafíion dT merit, as it doth our ¡unification thereby procttrea. If he will grant , that jtiftifvirig Faith refpedieth Chrifi's Satisfadlion & Me- rite , as the Caufe , in which we are to have an interefi, and under which We muff refugeottr felves, and úpon the account of which we are lobe accepted ti
