aryl's Righteoufnefs the objeE of Faitb. C A P. 33, accepted of God , and accounted Righteous in his fight , all is granted that .1 delire. But his following exceptions arefounded upon a manifeft miftakerof his own , taking this Righteoufnefs, whereof we fpeak , and Juftificarion , for one and the fame thing: for hefaith. To fay therefore , that the juflifying aït of faith , it only the receiving o f.Chrifl's Righseoufnefr, or of ?unification, it to ex- clude the receiving of Chrifl his »felf, any tday , even to exclude him as Satir fier from the jt+jiifying aFt : d." to exclude from that att his Redemption bj Bloudshed Satisfatt ton & Merite. The miffake here is palpable : for we look on Righ- teoufmfs , which faith receiveth , as the Caufe , and on juftification as the Effect : when this Righteoufnefs of Chrift , the caufa procatarttica of our Jufliíìcation , is received by faith , it is imp ®ffible, but Chrift himfelf mutt be received as a Satìsfier : his Redemption , Bloudshed , Satisfaction & Me- rite , cannot be excluded ; for therein was the Righteoufnefs, which faith laith hold upon , in order to Jollification. He addeth for confirmation, for if it beonly the receiving of f ighteoujnefr , that is the juflifying aE1; than it it nei- ther the receivingof Chroflhimfelf, nor yet the acknowledgment of his Sátisfa;1ion& l(edernptiou by his blood. But this is nothing but what was faid, repeated agai- ne. Neither do we fay , that the juftifyingactof Faith , as it is called, isa receiving of Chrift's Righteoufnefs, as diftinct from himfelf : nor is it ima- ginable , huw Chrift's Righteoufnefs can be received , without the acknow- ledgment of his Satisfaction , and of the Redemption by his bloud. How he can fay , that Chrift's Righteoufnefs & our Juftification,. are but one and the fame thing , I do not underftand , when as he faith himfelf. Cath. Theol. of moral works Sect. 13. n. 208. that our firfl conflitutive jufli fi- ..cation ( which is it whereof we are here (peaking , to wit , that by which a foul isbroughtfi'om an Unrighteous to a Righteous State, as he fpeaketh. tí, 207. ) irin its nature aright to impunity d?' to life, or glory. Now lure , this Relation , or Relative Rate is one thing , and the Righteoufnefs of Chrift, the ground & meritorious caufe thereof is a far other thing. And when he faith Apologie ag. Mr. E yre §. 4. that he is well content to call Chrift's Righteouf- nefs of Satisfaction the matter of ours, and that the imputation of Chrifl'r &gh- teon f ìrefr, taken for Donation, is the forme of Conflitutive jufli f cation, & that fentential adjudication of Chrifi's Righteoufnefs to us , is the forme of our fenten- tial ?uflification. That Faith in otder to juftification doth in a fpecial manner ,eye the Righ- tcoufnefs of Chrift, is clear from Efài. 45: z4, 2.5, Surely shall one fay , in the Lord have I Righteoufnefs ; & then followeth. In the Lord shall all the feed of I frael be ju flif'ed. This truth is allo clearly held forth , when faith in the matter of Jollification, is called faith inChrift's blood Rona. 3: 25. for when ,faith lait h hold on the bloud of Chrift , it cannot but lay hold on his Surety Righteoufnefs, whom God fet forth to be a Propitiation ; and in & through whom there was a Redemption wrought verf. 24. for this blood was the Re= demption-money, the price payed , in order to Redemption.
