C H A P. 34. Faith in fnflif fpecially eyeth 6h0 , asa Prieff, 407 wit dole with him, and be in hint, and be united t6 him, who was made fin, tor fanners, that they might be clothed, with a fuffictent Righteouf nefs in him : fo that this points out Faiths eyeing Chrift, as fuch a Can. tioner, having the debt of fanners imputed to him and b- ecoming a Sacrifi- ce for fin. 6. Gal.. t: 16, 20. - We have beleeved in Chriff , that we might be fuflifled by the faith of Chrift. And what he did , when he thusbeleeved in Chrift , that he might he jnflified,. he plainly tels us verf. io. laying .lamcrucified with Chrift: thus he wan to the life of juftification ; by eyeing Chrift on the crof- fe , making fatisfadion unto jullice , and affenting unto that way,& acquief- cing in it , & refting & relying upon ir. And in the fame verf. he tels us , that his faith by which he lived , was on the Son of God , who have himfelf for him, that is, unto death. 7. Gal. 3: I I, 13 . The jufi shall live by faith. This is the Text we are up- on , and we have cleared how this life here mentioned is the life of jollifica- tion ; But what is the fpeciall objeft of this faith , in order to jollification ?' That is clearly enough pointed to verf. 13. Chrift bath redeemed us from the curfeoftheLaw, being made acurfe for us. It is Ch rill, & Chrift as Redee- ming .from the Curie of the Law, & that by being made a curie for us which only looks to his Prieftly office. S. Phel. 3: 9, Io, I1. Paul was defireousttobe found in Chrift, & to be partaker of his Righteoufnefsalone, which was by faith But whet was it in Chrift, that the eye of his Faith was mainly fixed upon ? He sheweth that verf. Io: u. That. I may know him, & the power of his refurreilion, (IT the: fellowship 'of his Sufferings , being made conformable to his death &c. Chrifl's, Sufferings, Death & Refurreélion were molt in his eye. 9. job. 3: 14, 15. And as Mofes lifted up the ferpent in the wildernefr , every fo mull the Son of man be lifted up , that whofoever beleeveth in him should not pe- rish, but have eternal life. The fpecial objet of faith here is Chrift ,; as lip fted up, that is, as Crucified. ,oh. 12: 3'2, 33. It will not be fufficient for weakening of thefe real-cans , to fay. That none- of thefe conclude , that faith in order to j uftification , eyeth Chrift as Prieft only : for (r) They fufficienrly prove, that faith in this matter of Ju ftificetion goeth to Chrift, as a Prieft, and eyeth his S :rifice , Bloltd t Redemption through his death d and we are called to provi no more , becau- fe it lyeth upon thofe, who are of another judgment to strew us from Sctipture, that Faith, in order to- the obtaining of juftification, ac`leth on Chrift's Kingly office, & receiveth him , as Lord. (z) `We know what out-; _cryes Papilts make againft the like Arguments of Proreflants for juftification' by faith , becaufe it is not faid, we are juftified by faith alone: (3) Though the Scriptures do not as plainly fay , that faith in jollification doth not in act, efpeciall manner eye Chrift , as King & Prophet ; as it faith, we are not ju- flifiedby works ; Yet we are bound to follow the light of the word, and to, regulate ourconceptions, by what we finde there exprefl'ed , & if we hnde not any mention-made :of faith in Chrift'tcommand or Government', or the- like relating to his Kingly office, as we heareof Faith in hisBlood '& the Ddd 3 li ?it
