C H'A P. 34. Faith in jufiif, fpecially eyetli Clirifi, as a Priefi; 4 '09, Therefore as he is a King to fubdue Enemies , th faith-of his people is to act upon him , as fuck , when they would have their fpiritual Enemies fubdued ; & as He isa Prophet to teach, the faith of his people mutt adupon him , as fuch, when they would have Light, Counfel & Direction ;. fo, as He isa Pneu to Die , Satisfie, make Atonement , Reconciliation & Peace , their Faith is to a6t upon him , as fuch , when they would have Guilt removed , & Peace made up betwixt God , & their fouls. Sixtly. The end & defigne of aflerting Chrift , as King to be as fpecially the Oblect of Faith , in Juftification , as is Chrift , as Prielt , may fufiicient- lyrenderit fufpicìous; for it is, as we touched above, to bring -in our Obe- dience, as diftinct from Faith , or as included in ir, to be the Condition of Juftification, the fame manner of way , that Faith is : though, as was clea- red above, the confequence will not be found good. The reali queftion here (as is well obferved by others) is not , whether any thing of Chrift; s to be excluded from being the Object of Juftifying Faith. But what , in and of our felves , under the name of Receiving Chrift as King , is to be admitted to share with Faith , in its place and intereft , in our Jufli fication ? Seventhly. To fay , that faith acteth , in order to juflification , in as fpe- cial a manner , on Chrift as a King , as on Chriftas a Prieft -, is to alter the Nature , Life & Ends of Faith , in this work & to give it the Place & Power of a proper poteftative condition , as it is a vertue & work of ours; & not to look upon it as bringing allfutable fupplies, inadiftinct manner , from Chrift,, as was shown above : and this is but futable to that alteration of the Nature of the New Covenant , that is made by the afherters of this , where- by it is of the fame fpecifick nature with the Old Covenant ofWorks ; as if it were no more , but a new Edition thereof, with Tome alterations , as to the Conditions. Let us now fee, what Mr. Baxter faith tothecontrary, in his Catholic.` Theo!. p. 2. of moral works. Seét. 7. p. 5 5. &c. He tels us (n. ioç. ) That to be juflified by faith in Patrl's fence, it all one ,ar to be jnflified by becoming Chrillians. An(. We grant , with him , that to be a Believer , a Oifciple, and a Chriflian, are all one, in the Gofpelfenfe,- & that by the fame Faith , by which one is juftified , he is a Chriftian allo : hut thisproveth not, that Faith , in order to juftification , acteth not, in a fpecial manner , on Chrilt , as a Prielt ; and we have found, how Paul both in his Doctrine, and in his own Practice , explaineth the acting of Faith in Juftification. This may ferve for an anfwere alto to what he faith (n. io6. ) to wit , that the faith, by which we are jufti feed it e-(jentially a beleeving fiducial. confens to our Covenant relation to God the Father , Son d9' Holy Ghofi for, we grant, that it is but one & the fame Faith , which doth all this , but yet this Faith may be conceived, as wring in a peculiar manner in order to jollification. We grant alto, that it is the fame faith , by which we have Right to the he nefifes of the Covenant, & by which we are juftified; Yet we fay, that in order to Juftification , that fame Faith , which receiveth whole Chrift , and thereby a.Right to the benefices of the Covenant , acteth in a peculiar manner,
