C H A P. 34. Faith in juflif. fpecially eyed) ariyl, as a Prieft. 413 We only fay , that in orde.t to the obtaining of juflification, Faith aneth in a peculiar manner on Chrifl's Righteoufnefs & Merites , & conceive that in this , there is neit;,er one , nor two falshoods. 1. ( faith he ) ;fit mean that faiths receiving ail is the formalis ratio conditionis or that it jufli faeth not quà conditio donationis, but qua receptio juflitiæ Chriff, it is falfe. Anf. We are not here fpeaking precifely of the formalis ratio conditionis , tafuch a Philofo- phical Notion : for we fay, that Faith in order to Juflihcation , receiveth Chrifi's Righteoufnefs; & that the Lord bath fo appointed. Let Philofo. phers break their heads on thefe rationes formales , & the qua's & qua's ; we (peak of this matter , fo as every foul concerned may underftand it.. And then ( faith he) 2. that [ only the Accepting of Righteoufnefs juflifierh us , that is, is the condition of jaflificatiou) is a falshood. This he should have proved to have been afalshood : but in all this difcourfe of this , we ha- ve had nothing like a proof, only confident Alfertions, & that in great number. But in his Cenfefjionpag. ;5. where he hath the fame difcourfe for fubffan- ce, he cireth leveral paffages of Scripture , on the margine, as if they we- re confirmations of what he faith : And yet not one of thern comettl home to the point in hand , as a short view may difcover. For Col. z: 6. proveth what we deny not , to wit that Beleevers receive Chrifl jefus the Lord : We have shown above , that whole Chrtfl belongeth to the Obje'5 of Faith that is Juflifying : but we are here fpeaking of the fpecialaEfingofthat faith, in order to luflification. Pfal. 2: iz. only proveth , that fuch shall perish , as do not kiffe & fubmit to the Son & that killing & fubmitting unto him , is required in order to being faved. Mat. I1: 2S, 29. faith, that fuch as would have reft & eafe, that is freedom from fin & mifery here & hereafter , muff come to Chrifl , & take his yoke upon them , & Learne of him : And in order to that particular reft & cafe , had :in luflification, we fay allo, that they muff come to Chrifl, & take on his Righreoufnefs, which is eafie, though it feem a yoke to unrenewed Nature. Luh. 19:27. Proveth indeed, that fuch as will not have Chrifl to reigne over them, s-hall perish; but doth' doth not prove, that in order to Juflification,Chrifl muflbe received, asaKing Flom.10 9,Io. proveth, that faith eyethChrifl,as railed from the dead byGod, ( which refpeneth his Death & Sacrifice) & that for a Righteoufnefs, in order to the life of Juflification; which is what we fay , Mat.17: 5. & Mark. 9 :7. prove, what is:not denied, to wit, thatit is the will of God, that Chriff his only beloved Son should be heard & obeyed , in all things. And job. to: 3,4, 9, 27. only proveth , that Chrifl's sheep know & hear his voice : And woo denieth this ? rob. t2: 4.6, 47, 4S. showeth, what benefices beleevers shall receive ,& what shall befall unbeleevers: but touch not the point now in hand. Ad. is 3 o, 33, 34., 36, 38. Proveth, that Chrifl is indeed a King , that allfuch , as would be faved, muff receive him , as the exalted King. Ad. 3: 22, 23, z6. Proveth, that he is that Prophet, that was fpoken of by Mofes, &that he Died , Role againe & fent forth the Gofpel . to the end, that poor (inners might be turned from their iniquities : But there is nothing here to prove, that Faith, in its fpeciala&ing, in order to juflification, recei- Bee z veth
