416 Faith the Condition of iluiif. continued. CH A P. 3 5, 'unification here fpoken of, is that which is before God , whereby the Be- leever is indeed brought into a State of Peace & Reconciliation with God & hath obtained a Right unto the Inheritance of Life. 6. When we (peak hereof the continuance , or Not lofeing of Iuflifica- tion , the luftification fpoken of niuft be that State or Relation , whet into the Beleever is already brought : for that only can be laid to be continued, while we are living , and that only can be Paid properly to be lofed , or Net - lofed , which a man hath : Thefe feeme then to be two dining queftions. What is the Condition of our final Abfolution in ludgment; & what is th;G Condition of the continuance of our juftification here ; which Mr. Barlèër 'feemeth to confound Confef. p. â3. as the Papifir doconfound theirfecond juftification with the lafl judgment , when they are pleading for works, being required as thecae es thereof. 7. Though as we have feen before , Iuftification imporreth more than Remiflîon of fins; Yet in this queftion of the Condition of the Continuance of Jultification , the matter feemeth to be brought to this iffue ; whether works of Obedience be the Condition of future RemifTìon of fins , in the ju- ifified. And though there may be conceived of, as diftinEt queflions , yet the clearing of the way of the Remißïon of f.ature fins ,. may ferve much to cleare the prefent Qeflion; for if it befound , -that the fame courfe is taken for Remíflìon of future fins, that was taken at firft , it will be manifeft , that jollification iscontinùed upon the fame termes, or in the fame manner, that it was at firft obtained, if properly we can fpeak at all of the Conditions of its Continuance. r Having premitted - there things , the Qeflion is. Whether faith alone, or works alone or faith with works , are the condition required on our part, for the Continuance , or not - lofeing of the (late of juftification ? And I jud- ge as faith alone was required at firft , in order to jutlification , fo that alone is to be called the Condition of the continuance of juftification : or that the Condition both of our fire} inftalling in that time of juilification, & of the Continuance of the Privilege, or of Beleevers continueing in that flare , is the fame grace of Faith. Yet there two things would be noted. I. That though the firft ad of Faith in Chrifl, doth fuflïce to the entering of a foul into the fiate of jnflification ; Yet we do not meane that that one firft , fo- litarie, & numerical aEtfufi1iceth for all time coming albeit it fufliceth for making up of the Relation , according to the appointment of God; for the fame Faith is to continue in its habite; Yea & in its a lings. So that we (la- te not the Qieflion fo thickly, as Mr. Baxter feemeth to do , Confe . p.47. when from the Continuance of the habite of Faith , & from the renewing ads of that Faith , required after the firft ad of Faith, he inferreth , that much more goeth to_tbe continueing of our juftification , than doth at firft jrtftifie us. But our queftion is about the addition of Jincere Obedience which he there mentioneth. 2. When we fuppofe the Continuance of Faith, not only as to its habite , but as to its renewed aEtings; we do not fuppofe , that the ab`tings & Etfedts , or Concomitans of Faith afterward , are every way the fame, with what they were at firft ; fo that we may alfo yeeld to this diffe-
