C tr A P. 35. Faith the Condition of7uffif. continued. 41'7 difference , & grant thatfome thing moremay be requifite afterward. Par- ticularly, in order to the Remiion of Tome hainous fin , in the adting of Faith or in theEffed}s or Concomitants thereof, at leaft as to meafure, or outward lignifications , to wit , in Godly forrow , Humiliation Forgi- ving ofothers , Rellitution, or the like; & yet it will Rill remaine true, that justification is continued by Faith , & not by Works. For the proofof what we conceive to be truth, we lay down thefe grounds, both from Scrpture & Reafon; as . I. The words of the Text , whereupon we are , do evince this : for it is Paid, the jut liveth by Faith : And , as was cleared at the beginning of our diCcourfe , the words, as ufed by the Prophet Habaku1, from whom they ate cited , are Cpoken of fuch , as were already Beleevers & Juilifieel ; and pointed out the way, how they were to have a life , in an evil time ; and how they were to continue , or be keeped in that State ofFavoure with God, whereinto they were brought : to wit by Faith ; for the juß shall live by hi: Faith; and accordingly the fame words are cited by the Apoftle Heb. To: 3 `ï, 39. Now the jufl shall live by faith; but if any man dram back, my foul shalt have no pleafure in him. But we are not of them , that draw back;, unto perdition, but of then that beleeve to the Paving of the foul. Where living by Faith is op- poled to drawing back , to wit , through unbeleefe ; and as drawing back is unto perdition , fo beleeving is to the Paving of the foul; & therefore the Continuation of this life of justification unto the end , even unto the final Salvation of the foul , is by Faith. This life of juftification as it is begun by Faith ( as the Apoftle evinceth R.oin. I: 17. and in our prefent Text citing in both places thefe fame words, for that end ) fo it is continued by Faith , as the only condition thereof. And to fay , that the particle only is not here added ; & therefore, other Works of Obedience mutt be , or may be ad- joyned here , in this matter, notwithfranding it be Paid , the full livery by Faith , were in effedt to defiroy the Apofiles Argument, in our Text, where he ufeth this fame expreflion , without the addition of only , to prove , that we are not juftfied by the works ofhe Law. Therefore, as this affertion, that the ju /lliveth by faith , proveth justification by faith without the works of the Law; fo the fame proveth the Continuation of Justification, with out the works of the Law , as the Condition thereof. z. The Grounds & Caufes of Jullification , mentioned by the Apoftle Rom. 3: 22, 24, 25, z6. hold good als well in the Continuation , as in the firft beginning of justification', for there, as well as here, the Righteouf- nefs of God without the Law is manifefted , even the Righteoufnefs ofGod, which is by Faith of Jefus Chrift , unto all, and upon all them , that belee- ve : for there is no difference. Juftification firfr & laftly is free by his gra- ce, through the Redemption , that is in Iefus Chrift , whom God bath fer fort to be a Propitiation , through faith in his blood. And there is not the leaft hint given, that the matter is altered, in the Continuation of ju- flification. 3. As the beginning of juftification is fo contrived, as all boafring is ta- ken away, fo muft the Continnance thereof be conceived to be? But if works'
