C x A n. 3 5. Faith the Condition of tuftif, continued; 419 5. It will alwayes hold ttue that God is he who juttifieth the ungodly & fo juftifieth him , that worketh not , but him to whom faith is counted for Righteoufnefs. Rpm. 4: 5. But if the Continuance of Jufìification were by works; & works were counted for Righteoulnefs , in order to the conti- nuance of juftification; God should not continue to be the ju(lifier of the ungodly : but should juftifie the ungodly at firft, & thereafter luftifie the Godly; whereof the Text gìveth not the leaft hint. 6. The Inftance of David cleareth this alto P.om.,4:6,7,S. for Davidis thete Pfal. 32.fpeaking of himfelf, longafterjhe was firft jullified and yet his words faying, blejjed are they, whofe iniquities are forgiven J c. prove Jutli- fication by faith , without the works of the Law ( which is the Apofiles fco- pe, & the end, for which he adduceth this prove ; and we muff not think., that any of his probations are impertinent ) .but this they could not prove, ifthe continuance of juftification were by works, & not by Faith only ; as is manifeft; for who can inferre that the beginning'of Juftification is by Faith alone , from this , that the continuance of juftification is by works -? but when the Continuance of Juftification is by Faith alone, it followeth manifeftly , that the beginning of it mutt be by faith alone. Yea , it is hence alfomanifett, thatPardonof fins committed alter Jultification, is not had. by works , but by the imputation of Righteoufnefs, without works, for faith Paul, David defcribeth the bleJJedne fs of the man , unto whom God imputeth 'r 1Zighteoufnefs, without work:: And 'Tow did. David defcribe this? When he laid , ble,jed are they whofe iniquities are forgiven ire. 6. Paul telsus Rpm. 5:2. that as byChrift , wehaveaccefs by Faith into grace , fo in the fame we Rand , & rejoice in the hope of the glory of Gad. Accefsinto this grace mutt import the State ;of Juflification , & as this is by Faith , fo is the ftanding & abiding therein ; and confequently , the con- tinuance of Ju(tification : and there is no word of works here at all, in this whole affaire. 7. Paul likewife confirmeth this , in his own Experience Gal. 2:20. where he tels us, how , and what way he lived unto God , being dead to the Law , to wit by the Faith of the Son ofGod : and as this was true or the life of Sanëtt- fication .: fo much more of the life of luftification , both as begun & as con- tinued.; for the whole life of a Chriftian, now crucified with Chrift , & li- ving unto God , is here fpoke to : And this is in oppofition to the works of the Law, as is cleare from verf, 16. & from the following verf. 21. 8. The fame is confirmed by the doctrine of the Apoftle Ephef. 2:. S,_9, ro. for by grace are ye faved , through faith - not of works left any man should boat!: for we are his workmanship , created in Chrif jefus , unto good works , which God bath before ordained , that we should walk in them. This Salvation taketh- in both the Beginning, Continuance & End of our life, of Jufification & all this is by Faith alone , & exprefly it is laid , not to be by works , and that, left any man should boaft ( which confirmerh our third argument) & there works are works of Gofpel- obedience, and he tell us of another end & ufeof thefe, than to be the Condition of the Continuance of our Juftiti- cation, even tube the way we should walk in , according to the fore -ordi- ' ff nation
