42cr Faith the Condition of juflif, continued. CHAP. nation of God , and carry as his workmanshipe, created thereunto. 9. We have the Apo(' les own practice againe let before us , to cleare this matter Phil. 3: 9. where he tels us , what was hismaine defigne-& work , not at firft only , when he was Juftified ; but long thereafter CO spew what was his conftant defigne , & should be to the end; even labour to be found, in Chrift, renuncing his own Righteoufnels, and to Peek to be hid under & covered with that Righteoufnefs , which is through the faith of Chrift & which is of God by Faith; So that as he beleeved in Jefus Chrift , that he might be juftified by the Faith of Chrift , and not by the works of the Law. Gal. 2: 16. So here he sheweth , that he will continue in this exercife to the end. io. We may adde tothefe, that pafiáge of Paul. Tit. 3: 5, 6, 7. Not by works of Righteoufnefs , which me have done but according to his mercy he faved acs (and this Salvation , fure , will take -in the Continuation of ;unification) by the washing of regeneration cis' renewing of the holy Ghefl ; which he shed on ti: abundantly , through jefus Chrifl , our Lord : that being ttifir feed by his grace, we should be made heirs , according to the hope of eternal life. And when he wit- Ieth Titus in the following verfe, to affirme , that they which have belee- ved in God, may be careful to maintaine good works, as being goodÿ profitable unto men ; he addeth nothing of their being the Condition of the Continuance of our juftification, as furs, he had a faire occafion to do, if the matter were fo : but he had fully excluded them from all intereft there- in verf. 5. Wemay adde to thefe a few Reafons. I. Is it not confiderable , in this point , that Paul fpeaking fo frequently a difputing at fuch a lengthof juftification & clearing fo many things about it ; Yet , in all his difcourfes thereupon he never mentioneth this Condi- tion (to wit works of obedience) of its continuance.. And, which is all() eonfiderable, though he oftentimes prefs to holinefs , & ufeth many Argu- ments to that end; Yet he never maketh mention of this place &office it bath , in & about the Continuance of juflification ;. which lure , is fuppofed by the Affertors , to be a mighty argument unto the conftant exercife of nolinefs. 2. We have proved above , that juflification at irft is by the Imputation, of the Righteoufnefs of Chrift received by faith ; and we have shown, that Faith in 'unification fpecially eyet.h the Righteoufnefs of Chrift , & refteth thereupon. If then our perfonal Obedience be brought in to be the Condi- tion of the Continuance of Juatficaiion , Chrill's Righteoufnefs is quite bid afrdefrom having any Further interelt therein , and the Beleever is never,.. after the firft time,. to atifaith upon the Righteoufnefs of Chrift , and the reafon is , becaufe worksdo not ad fo upon the Righteoufnefs of Chrift, as Faith Both; neither have they that capacity todo fo. But how abfurd is it to thinkor fay , that the Beleever hath no more to do with Chrift's Righteouf- iseis iL And how contrary is it to the fixed r'efolution of Paul Phil. ;: 9.. And how inconfi(tent with the whole (cope of the Gofpel , which is the power of God unto Salvation to every one that beleeveth , and wherein is the Righ-
