And this he tels us , he bath fortnerlY shewed in many Scriptures, meaning , I fuppofe , the pafiages he had im° mediatty before cited on the margine, But to thefe I Anfwettin general.`' That not one of them- maketh mention of the continuance o our juflifica tion or of our not lofeing of it : And therefore it cannot be Paid from thefe, that the word exprefly conflituteth thefe Conditions of our notmlofing Jolli- fication. But we shall confider them particularly. Mat. iz: g6, 37. fpeaketh not of juflification4'whereofwe are now trea- ting but of the lift judgment, and we fee no caufe of confounding this Jollification, whereof we (peak , or its Continuance , with the Taft judg- ment, as Papißs do confound their fecond juflification with this judgment; andiabure the fame Scriptures here adduced by Mr. Baxter &the like, to prove their fecond juflification to be by_wo! ks. jam. 2:24. fpeaketh nor of the Continuance or not Poling of jollification 3 ; but of the very beginning of jullification , which is not by a dead faith or by a faith , that cannot produce works of Obedience , or by fuch a faith , as devils have; but by a faith that is working , & making the foul prompt & ready to yeeld all Obedience unto the Lord : and this is the true meaning of the words, as was showne above, and the wholefcope of the place eviden- cetb, 'Will Mr. Baxter fay , that by a dead Faith , and by a Faith that can- not fave , and by a Faith that is in devils & is.attended with no Chriflian Love , we are brought into a juflified flare at firfl ? No lure a and yet this is the faith , that Tares oppofeth unto works, or rather unto a working faith , whereby we are juflified firft & Iaft, as was Abraham verf. 21. whofe faith was fuch, as it wrought with his works, and by the fame was manifefl to be what it was , the true & favingfaith of God's Fled. And lure, this Faith of Abraham, and the faith that wrought in Rahab , was another fort of Faith, than is the Faith of devils-, or. that Faith, that is but a dead car - cafe. Mat. 6: r4? Is% fpeaketh of Remifliön of fins : And Tfuppofe, it will not befaid , that every one, who forgiveth his neighbour, doth thereby and thereupon obtaine Remiffion of his own fins, at the hands of God; other - wayes Heathens , &wicked perlons may be Paid to have their lins Pardoned before God, becaufe they may forgive others, fore wrongs done unto themfelves. If it be laid , that fuch cannot forgive others a right, not ha- ving a principle of grace, and not being in Chrift True, but then we fee, that it is not this forgiving abftraélly confidered, that is fpoken of here , but a Forgiving , flowing from faith & principled thereby ; and fo the meaning of the place is , That without loch a Faith in Chrift, as principleth & promp- teth to Pardoning of others , we can expeál no pardon of our own' fins from God; nor have ground to fuppofe that we are indeed pardoned of God: our forgiving of others then is here mentioned as the native EffeEt, &evident Signe of Faith 9_ as our Commentators manifeft upon the place, fpeaking a- gainft the Papas. See Paresis, Gualter & others. Paresis particularly difpro- veth the PapifI'sglofs; &fayeth, that our pardoning of others muflfollow upon God's pardoning ofus, as he cleared) from Mat.
