This place then faith , That while we cannot finde in our heart , a readinefs cheerfully & heartily to forgive others we have no ground to imagine, that our fin ties are pardoned; for all fuch as are pardoned of God , have this Chritlian difpofition flowing from'faith in Chr ifl : They may have this , as to the feed & root ; but till it grow up to yeeld this fruite., they want the evidence of their faith &confequently of pardon. 1. joh. I: 9. meaneth fu:h a Contèfion of fins , as is accompanied with the caking rife by faith of the bloud of Chrifi , that cleanfeth from all fin verf : 7. and with a running to the Advocat with the Father , Jefus Chrifl the Righteous, who is a Propitiation for fins Chap. 2: i, 2. Moil wicked pet- fons, as Saul may make confeffìon of their fins; but not fo as to run to the fountaine , the blood of fprinkling : And by a Confeffion , that is not ac- companied with this wing , they can attaine to no Remiaiion before God And therefore faith only adingin bumbleConfefhon to the glory of God & to the taking of shame to themfelves , is the condition of Pardón, & of Con- tinuance of Juflification , as to this. Revel. 22: 14. is alto abufed by the Papiflr. to prove theirfecond juftifica- tion to be by works. The word É tt -ia, here ufed , doth not aiwayes denote right , or jut : for it fometimes fignifieth meer freedome , liberty & power to do Each or fuch a thing as 1..Cor. 9: 4, 5, 6. And fo here the words im- port , that fuch as do his comniandements , are blefled; for thereby they have free accefs unto the tree of life, unto Chrifi, their objeEtive bleffed- n °fs, which is the fame with that, which is commonly faid , vit. thatWorks of Obedience are the way of the Kingdom , but not the caute of reigning. It will not fuite with the Gofpel , to fay , that by our works of obedience we buy a right to the tree oflife , even in part, or in fubordination to Chrifl's blood; for Ch rift bath purchafed the whole Right : & nothing-of ours mufi be joined as a part of that price, otherwife mull we have a proportionable share of the glory to ourfelves. Nor can it be faid , that by our works of Obedience we obtaine a Right to Chrill & to his Merites; for before we have a Right to Chrirt, we can do no works of Chrillian Obedience , and CChrifl alone bath bought to us both Grace , .& Glory : But our works of Chritlian Obedience , though they cannot .precede our Right to, yet they may go before our Pof:;effìon of the Inheritance purchafed; now Right & Pof eiTion are different things. But in fine we fay, that this place, (peaking of the pofíefTion of glory, is not appofite to the purpofe now in hand , for Jufiification is different from Glorification. Rpm. 8:30.
