,C HA P. I. Imputat, of Chriffs Aelipe and Páffv. o edience. ,,,, To Pry Che-addeth ) that Adam war not perfebily Righteous, dr confequently in a jut ifzed orate or condition before God, untill his fall by fin, it to place him into an efiate of condemnation before bic fin , there being no middle or third of ate betwixt.thefe two. ilnf. Tins was obviated before. Adam's flare before his fall, was aftate.ofInnocencie, wherein-he enjoyed the favour &,prefence of God , he beingperfedtly Righteous , in reference to that ftate ; & to what was required of him ; but juftrfied he was not; for the reward was not ad-. judged onto him. So chat , as to him there was a middle Rate betw:ixt,a State of Jollification & a State of Condemnation ; though , as to us there is not , as the places , which héciterh afterward namely Rom .5: IS .. &.S: I, 2. show, & the wholeScriptures evince. He clofeth this matter thus. Therefore to grant, . that forgivenefs of fins pals a man intothe fame eflate df condition , wherein -Adam flood before his fall. (which it generally granted by -men of oppofite judgment in this, controverfe; rnothing granted neither , in this , but the ztnqueflzonable truth ) is to grant the-poine in queflion, .dr to acknowledge the truth laboured for , throughout this whole d,f cour- fe. AnJ: his not granted that remiffion of fins, as filch, putteth aman eve- -,ry way into the fame C,onditiou, wherein Adamltood before his fall; for it putteth not a man in the fame e(tate of inherent holinefs, wherein Adam was but it putteth aman into the fame eftate of freedome from any obliga- tion to punishment , for it taketh away the reams preme, fo that a pardoned man, .as fuch , is no more under the adtual obligation unto the curfe ,& wrath of God , threatned for tranfgrefrion , than was Adam , before he fell: . and this isail, that is confefled. Which is. far , yea very far from granting the point, that he gojeth about to eftablish for he would have remition., as fuch , put a man fn the (late of full right to the reward , to the end he might exclude the imputation of the obedience or Righteoufnefs of Chri(t, as not being necefl'ary unto thil.cnd, contrary to the Scriptures of truth. 4- dam, before he fell , had not right unto the promifed reward., becaufe he was to finish his courfe of obedience , before he could obtaine that : And therefore the granting, that remiflion putteth a man into the fame Condi- tion, wherein Adam Rood , will contribute nothing to his end. His 4. Conclufion is. That perfect remi îenof fins includeth the Imputation or acknowledgment of the obfervation of the whole Law ; even as the imputation of the N,,Lau, fulfilled, neceJJ'4rily includes the non imputatiou of fin, or the forgivenefs of all fin, in cafe any bath been committed. 6nf. The conclufion is manifeitly falfe, if we fpeak of remiflion (imply, & abltradtivly as .fuch ;. And the ground bete alleia,ed for it, is ambiguous; for the imputation of the Law 'fulfilled, may either be to fuch, as never broke it, & then it doth not inclu- de remifiion, but taketh away all necetlity of it; or to tranfgreffours, and then indeed it may prefuppofe r-erniflion , but doth not include it, as Inch. But to remove ambiguities., we shall diltinguish, &fay , that perfedt Re- million of fins includerh.the acknowledgment of the cbfervation of the who- le.Law, in rfpe of Punishment; but notin refpet of the Reward; that is , perfedt Remifiion of fins exeemeth a man from Punishment, as well as aif he had;perfer1ìy keep.ed the.Law; but cloth not give him tight.to the H h h -war4; ,
