CH A P. 3. We muff not lean to any Rt'ghteou free fs within us. Saint denied to be a Saint , upon a fal fe pretence of fell: denyal. An f. Of fuch a caufe of any good work , he knoweth the objection fpeaketh , that should have the glory &praife thereof; and & of good works, a5 the ground & formal Caufe of [unification ; which thee againn whom Mr. Barter here difputeth do deny. But we may fee here, what Mr. Baxter accouuteth good works; even fuch as the moll damnable wretch , and pofliblie the devil him - felfmay do ; that is a work materially good, though far different from the good works defcribed to us in Scripture. And thus the 'unification upon good works , w hi. h Mr. Baxter here meaneth , mutt be a Jollification , that all Heathens , damnable wretches , yea & devils themfelves are capable of: But this is not the 'unification we (peak of , of which who ever are partakers shall be glorified loom. S: 3 o. \Vefay nothing , that giveth him ground to think, that our thoughts are , that a Saint should be i enyed tube a Saint, upon pretence of Self. denyal. Only we fay that !itch as areSaintsindeed will be loth to rob God of his glory , or take any of that to themfelves, which is due to him alone , in fo far as they aft as Saints ; And they should nor , becaufe Saints , glory & boars, as if their jollification before God, were by their Sanctity & good works ; & not of meer grace , through the imputation of the Surety- Righteoufnefs of Chrin, One thing I would ask, Doth Mr. Baxter think , that Chrift's Righteaufnefs hath'merited that jolli- fication , which thofe damnable wretches & devils may partake of, by any good work , which they do ? himfelf told us in the foregoing ( n. Si. ) that all Righteoufnufs which formally junifieth, is our own , & that to be made 'Juit & to be jufified are the fame , or equipollent ; and CO be Jufified con - ítitutively is nothing elfe , then to be made fach as are perfonally them- felves jolt. Now', when devils & damnable wretches may be the caufes of fome good work , that good work cannot but formally junrfie them , and they thereby becomeconaitutively jufified, I would enquire, whether this 'unification be purchafed by Chrin or not ? And againe I would enquire, whether thisJunification be accompanied with pardon of fin , & with Right to Chtift & to glory , or not ? If not, how can it be called a )unification ? & !fit be not a juftification, how can they be hereby formally jufified, & con- , nitutively jut tied ? He tels us next ,( n. IS ) Ar God it feen here in the glafc cf his work r , fo he it to be laved d? praifèd , as fo appearing. T his is , lay I , good & reatonable. What then ? Therefore (faith he, he that dishonoured, his work , dishonotri'eth God , hrndereth his due love and praife. This confequence , I grant , is good; but what is it to the point in hand ? Arid his mofi lovely & honourable work( faith he) on earth is his holy image on his Saints; & as Chrifi will come to be admired d?'" glorified in them at laß , fo God muß be feen d? glorified in them here in fume de- gree. Neither, fay 1, is any thing of this to the purpole in hand. Ueaddeth. And to deny the glory of his irnage is the malignant; way of injuring him , d7 that in which the war(i wilt ferve you. And what then ? He that will praife God" ( faith he further) as Creator d? Redeemer muff` praife his works , of Creation dT Redemption: And is it the way of praifing bim, as our SanFi tier , todifpraife skis work of Sant l i fication ? Anf. r, rnaketh all this'to the purpofe ? Mutt al4 457 r
