46z We muff not Jeans to any Righteoufnefs within us. C H A P. 5, the obfervation thereof , & yet now , he accounted that fame Righteouf- nefs , which formerly was gaine to him', now to be lofs & dung, fo that tnts could not be , his Ceremonial Obfervances ; for it had been a (mall de- naonflration of his exceffive defire to win Chrifl , to count that lofs now,. which he had before comdemned as unnecef fry. Yea as unlawfull , & had laid afide, as flich. So that he meaneth all that , which could be called his own Righteoufnefs, & which is of the Law, and was not that Righteouf- nefs which is through the Faith of Christ , and of God by Faith. And it is alfo obfervabI.e , that the Apt-title ufeth a very comprehensive terme betide, faying , And 1 count all things but Joffe &c. Moreover, th _ Jewish obfervan- ces , while that Law flood in force, were ufef::l & good , &'ra Righteouf- nefs , as well as the obfervation of the moral Law, to which they were allo reducible, being enjoined by vertue of the Second Command. And if thefe obfervances could be brought ( through mens corruption,) in competition, with & let in oppofition to Chrift and therefore were puflk accounted as lots & dung & nothing, in that refpe61: why ought not allo moral obfer- vances be io accounted feing they through mans corruption , can be &are too oft brought in competition with , & let in oppofition againit Chrif , & his Righteoufnefs ? If Mr. Baxter will yeeld to this , he needs difput no mo- re at this rate. He addeth. So if a man will conceit, that his common grace will juflifit without holinefs ; or hir holinefs without pardon , dT the Ri ?,hteoufnefs of Chriít , be muff deny this Righteoufnefs; that is , he n: ufl deny it to be what it is not , d,- mxfi call away ( not it , but ) the falfe conceits of ir. Anf. We think them in an errour , who conceit , that either common grace will jufti- fii without holinefs , or holiners with or without pardon & the Righteòuf- nefs ofChrifl : and it is not proper for him , who will not hear others faying, that Faith juftifieth , to fay , that holinefs jufli.fieth. And it is as impro- per to.fay , that pardon julifieth : Let him tell the , how holinefs with par -. don can juftifie ? And as for the Righteoufnefs of Chrifi,. all men ( with Mr. Barter) are juflified by it alike, for it only purchafed the New Cove- nant, and that it did to all alike, snd is no other way imputed unto any why tfomever. And fo, according to his judgment it mutt be denied , that Chrill's Righreoufnefs becometh the beleevers through God's imputation, & that believers are therewith clothed , and thereupon made juridically Righ_ teous, and then jullified, or pronunced Righteous , through that imputed Surety Righteoufnefs of Chat.: this isthe felt- denyal that 'Mr. Baxter will teach us ; and. Dead of this.Surety-Righteoufnefs of Christ , we mutt be clo- thed ( according to him) with our own G:ofpel Righteoufnefs, Faith & New Obedience, and upon that ground , as the only neerefl formal reafon; or meritorious caufe, expeét to be juftified ; becaufe Chrifl's Righteoufnefs ).lath purchafed this Covenant, and connexion. Mr.Uaxter mutt not be of- fended, that I mention the word Mcrae here, remembering what he faith himfelf (n. 194.) where his £riendl.inefs to papils , & his difpleafure at Protellants'is fo remarkable, in thefe words. [ And thofe that reje6t the laying of force Papitls, who in t his fence fay , that Chri fl merited that we might uierite,.
