470 . What Law it is , by wbicb we are not- juffified C H A P. 4 of the Law ; as we have Peen; This he doth , when he pleadeth for the Abrogation of that Law , ez againft the obfervation of ir. (i) Mr. Baxter, as it would feem ,Yuppofeth, that Paul made no queftion concerning the Je wes themfelves, but yeelded that they were juftified & faved by their Law :. for the queftion was , faith he , whether the Gentiles might not as well be fa- ved thereby , as We ?ewes? But where findeth he this , either afl'erted, or granted by the Apoftle, or the Qiellion thus (laced by the Apoftle ? 2. Saich he. To prove the Affirmative , he proverb , that the Jewes themfelver cannot be [avid or juflified rnJerly or primarily by the Lam , notwithflanding the divinity & great excellency of it ; But muff be juflified by a Saviour , d9' free given Pardon dr Right to life , & to which the f ncere keeping of Mofes Law mar inten- ded robe but júbfervient. Anf. (1) Then the Quettion concerned the Jewes , as well as the Gentiles , & Paul did no more grant juf}ification by the Law to the one , than to the other. (2) Where firideth Mr. Baxter thefe reftriEtions, Merely or Primarily in all the Apof1les difput ? This is not faire , to pervert the Apoltles plaine peremptour , & abfolute Conclufioñs, & refirick them to a certain limited fenfe that they may the better be fubfervient to our de fignes, &our Hypothefes. Do the Apofiles Mediums only ferve to prove, that juftification is not by the Law Meetly or Primarily? Which of them all, I pray , bath only this force < (3 ) Though the keeping of Mofes's Law be he- re Paid to be but fubfervient ; Yet , according to Mr. Baxter , it was all their Righteoufnefs, no other was properly imputed to them, & upon it imme- diatly they received Pardon & Right to life as merited thereby ex pairs, the Saviour only procuring the New Covenant : that is , that all , who work well & keep the Law of Mofés , shall have free Pardon & Right to life. And thus they wereas well juftified by the works of the Law , as by faith : for faith was alto required of them r And then the meaning of the Apof}les Con - clufion Rpm. 3: 28. is, therefore we conclude, that a man is juftified by faith, and by the deeds of the Law : for both faith & works with Mr. Baxter, belong to this Strbfervíent Righteoufnefs , as he calleth ir. If this be confo- nant to the Apoftles dottrine, which. doth fo contradia it, let the Rea- der judge. 3. Saith he. That therefore itappeareth, that the Jewes did fo fondly admire the Law, d?ttheir National Privileges under it, that they thought the e.xail kee- ping ofit was nece f ary & fu f cient to 3?ufii fication d? Salvation. And they thought the Meffiiah was not to be their Righteoufnefs , as a Sacrifice for fin, dT meriter of free Pardon, ds the Gift of life, but only agreat king & Deliver , tor edeem them by Power from all their Enemies &Bondage. Anf. This miftake of the Jewes, concerning the Mefhah , fpeaketh nothing to the point , whereupon we are; that is, that Paul denieth juftification to be by the Law : And their errour & miftake about the Law, is not to be limited & reftri&ed to the Ceremo- nial Law; & fo the thing, that we fay, is confirmed hereby. (2) They thought the Mefïiah was not to be their Righteoufnefs And Mr. Baxter will not ha- ve him to be our Righteoufnefs, fave only, in that he hath purchafed the New Covenant, wherein our faith & obedience to the Law , is to be Looked , upon
