And yet thefe and feveral other Particulars of this alloy doth N1r. Baxter hold forth , as taught, in Scripture; as bath been leen elfewbere, C I-I A P. V. Works excluded in Juflification are not works only done before Faith, nor perfet works required in the Law of Innocency, nor outward works only. THe other Evafion , which fuch , as plead for the Intereft of Works in luftification , fall upon, to evite the dint of the Apoftle's argueing & concludings again}t Works , is , That by the works of the Law which Paul excludeth from ju(tification, works are meant, which are done before Converfion & Faith, by the ftrennth of Nature; & nor the works of grace done atter. This is the Evafion of Bellarrnine & others. But againft this we have thefe Reafon s to propofe. I. When the Scripture faith , we are luftrfied by faith , themeaning iS' that fo loon as afoul beleeveth in Chrift, by a true Faith, he is justified befo- re God : But this opinion faith , That a man is not justified when he belee- veth in Chrift; No not until( he performe Works of Righteoufnefs after he bath beleeved : And thus , we may conceive a man CO be a beleever , & yet not to be juftified ; which is contrary to the Gofpel 2. If we were justified by the Works of Regenerar perlons , we shóúld% be justified by works , that are imperfect ; and confequently by an impeded . Righteoufnefs : for thefe works being made our Righteoufnefs , if we be jri flified by them , as our Righteoufnefs , we mutt be justified by an irnperfeci' Righteoufnefs; for they are riot perfect, neither as to parts; nor as to de. grees.
