476 What works are excluded,in luffi f cation, C H A P. or occafion had there-been for that objeEtion Rom. '6: I. What shall we fay then ? Shall we continuein fin , that grace may abound ? What. ground could have to fay. We are justified by our works done after Regeneration; the- refore we may continue in fin that grace may abound ? Any might fee at fiat , how ridiculous this was. I S. And if vre are juftified by works -done after Regeneration , is it not firange , that in all Paul's anfwers unto this objection, he never once fayeth, norhinteth , that by thefe works we shall be juftified, 8z no other way , and yet this had been the shorte(t & cleareft folutton of the objeétion if it been according to the doctrine of j unification , delivered by Paul. 19. The falfe Apoliles, who were corrupting the do&rine of the Gofpel & of Juftiftcation , did not urge works done before Faith in the Gofpel, as the ground ofjuftihcation , for they were corrupting fuch , as had already embraced the Gofpel & beleeved in Chritt ? as is clear out of the Epiftle to the Galatians. Therefore when Paul is confuting their errour, & oppo- ftng himfelf unto them , he mutt deny that we are ;uftified by works done after Faith in Chrift. zo. Ju(tificatton by works done after regeneration is as oppofire to faith, & to living the life of juftification by faith , as juftification by works done. before Regeneration for the Law is never of faith , fo reafoneth Paul Gal. 3;, as, 12. But that no man is juflsfaed by the Law in the fight of God, it is evident For the jtsfí shall live by Faith : And she Law is not of Faith. 21. All the works of the Law are excluded : But works wrought after be. leeving &after Regeneration , are works of the Law,being required thereby Pfal. I19: 35. kom. y: 22. Therefore even there works are excluded. 22. When the Aponte excludeth works from being caufes of junification he mutt meane good works, for no man was ever fo mad , as to imagine, that he could be juftified by bad woiks. But no works can be called good works but filch as flow from faith, & from the Spirit of grace, granted in Regenera- tion. Therefore while good works are excluded , thefe done after Regene- ration are excluded. What is táid by Bellarmine, in confirmation of his fence of thefe works of the Law , which are excluded from juftification , is abundantly ant wered by all, that write againft him; & therefore we need not take any notice thereof. There isanother Evafion, found out by our Adverfaries in this matter , another gloffe put upon thefe words. By the works of the Law there shall no feshbe ju(lifzed. For (orne fay, that hereby the Apottle only excludeth thofe works, that are perfect, which were required by the Law in Innocency. This Evafion granteth,, that the tiw here fpoken of is not the Ceremonial Law,. for that was not required in Innocency ; but the Moral Law. The end why they invent this Evafion is not,to exclude works in the matter of juftification; but to eftablish their own fancie of afferting-jultification by other works,. than perfect works, required by the. Covenant of:works, to wit by impeded: works, which they fay , are required in the Gofpel : And therefore their meaningis , we are not juftified by perfealinlefs obedience; but by imper feéá
