Gofpel juí ification is by Faith , as the whole Gofpel cleareth ; but faith & imperfect works are not one & the fame : Yea they are as repugnant . in this affaire , as faith & perfect works are. We are juflified by faith, with- out the deeds of the Law. Rom. 3: 28. Gal. 2: 16. Living by faith & living by works , are appetite. Gal. ;: i i, 12. 7. 'unification by imperfect works, is not free juflificaticn by his grace through the redemption that is in Jefus Chrift , whom God hath fet forth tobe a propitiation through faithin his blood : as ismanifeft : But this is the Gofpel- ji.flification Rom. 3: 24, 25. S. Imperfect works, exclude grace , & are as inconfiflent therewith, as perfect works are. But Gofpel- juflification is by grace without works Ram. 3: 24. Ephef. 2: S, g. Tit. 3: 5,6, 7. The Major is clear from the places cited as alfo from Rom. ii: 6. If by grace, then Stir no moreofworkt otherwife grace it no more grace. But if it be of works, then is it no more gra- ce, otherwife work it no more work. Now if it be faid , that perfeft works are here underilood, and not imperfect works : it muff be raid allo, that Elation (of which the Apofile here fpeaketh ) is upon forefight of imper- feft works. 9. Imperfect works if made the Caufe of juftification, can give ground of boafting & of glorying, as we fee in the Pharifee Luk. I S. But Gofpel julli- fcation removeth all ground of boafting. Rom. 3:27 & 4: 2. IO. Imperfect works can not be accounted a perfeét Righteoufnefs ,by the Lord , whore judgment is according to truth Rom. 2 :2. But there is no ju- ftification without a perfect Righteoufnefs , either inherent , or imputed. God will pronounce no man Righteous , who is not fo , nor juftifie any as Righteous , who is not fo indeed : But upon the account o_ f an imperfect Righteoufnefs , can no man be juilifi -ed as Righteous. 1 r. Even this imperfect Righteoufnefs, when made the ground of ¡u- nification, will make the reward :of debt , and not of grace : As Abra- bam's woi ks, if he had been ¡unified by them, would have done : for A- braham's works were not perfect works, but imperfect works, as is ma- nife f}. 12. If juilification were not by perfect works, but by imperfect works, then through faith , or through Gofpel- jullificatioit , the Law should be made void, contrary to Rem. 3:31. The reafon of the confequence is, becau- fe hereby the Law, that requireth perfect obedience, is laid afide & another Law that requirethimperfect obedience admitted in its place : or rather the fame Law is pretended, but it is made void, as to its reclaiming perfectobe- dience; & muti now be fatificd with an imperte& obedience. But this is not to etlablish the Law , but to deltroy it, when many Jotes & titles are taken away from it Mat. 5:17,18. 13.
