CH A P. 6. It not meant the merite of works. 16. If this be all that the Aponleis difputing down , to wir , juflifi;ation by works , which we conceite to be meritorious, & not all junification by works, why did the Aponte adduce the Innance of Abraham , & infilt fo much upon it , as he doth Rom. 4 Shalt we think that Abraham that holy Patriarch & friend of God, did obey with any fuch conceite of intrinfick worth , in his obedience ? Was he infected with that leaven of Pharifaical pride ? And if not where is the confequence of the Apoflles argueing from his praótice ? Is it a good confequence to fay , Abraham was not juftified by -works performed in lincerity , without pharifaical pride & conceite of me- rites; therefore we cannot be juflífied by works, which we conceite to have merite in them : but by fuch works we can & muff be juftified when we conceite no merite in them , buta limple merite ex congruo , or ex patio? The like may be Paid of David , who had no conceite of merite in his works , & yet expeéted not to be juflified by them , but looked for free pardon , c`fZ for junificaticn through imputed Righteoufnefs. ECo111. 4: 6, 7, S. 17. If the Aponte had been eftablishing junification by works performed without fuch a fonde conceite of merite in them ; what ground was there for thatob ;eEtion which he preoccupieth Rim. 6: i. Paying. Shall rve fin, that grace may abound? The urging of junification by works , could give no chew or apparent ground for this. Neither can any fuch purpofe be in the lean Peen obferved, in all the anfwere at large profecutedChapters 6. & 7. which is given hereunto. There is not the lean hint given of his re1lifying of the mis- :apprehenfions , that any might have about works , as ifthey were or could be fuppofed.to be meritorious ex condigno : Nor is there the lean ground of furtniCe laid down , of their being meritorious of jufti.fication or of life eter. -nal ex congruoo, or ex patio : but all things found the contrary way : & life eternal is exprefly Paid to be the free gift of God. 18. Then all that Paul weaned, when he defired to be found of his jud- ge , not having his own Righreoufnefs , which is of the Law, was that he defired not to be found puft up with a pharifaical conceive of the perfeEtion & tneritorioufnefs of his works , as meriteing his junification & life ex condig- no, by their intrinfick value & worth. But no filch thing appeareth Phil. 3. -9. where he utterly renunceth his own Righreoufnefs, which is of the Law; that is, a Righteoutirefs confining in his obedience & conformity to the Law: for in oppofition to this, he dellireth to be found in that Righteoufnefs, which is through the Faith of Chrin, the Righteoufnefs , which is of God by faith; & this is Come other thing , than his own works, performed without that pharifaical opinion. 19. We are faved by grace , through faith , not of works, ten any man -should boaft , Ephef. y 8, 9. confectueutly not of any works , Icing all 'works give ground of boaning. And he meaneth fuch works , unto `which we are created in Chrift Jefus , as his workmanship.: and which God bath before ordained , that we should walk in them verf: to. Now thefe works are certainly works done without any vaine conceite of meri- te : and yet we fee, that by thefe works we are not brought into a late of Salvation. 0 o o z :,o. The
