CH A P. 7. pates z ; I <}. &c., Cleared and Vindicated. +8'9' thus could flow from their misunderflanding Of Paul': Epift!es, is not any way probable, feing Paul in all his Epistles , even where he fpeaks molt of ju- ftificationby Faith without the deeds of! he Law , preffeth the necellity ( f holinefs in order to Salvation , Co as no imaginable groiind hereof can with the lealt of shewes be pretended. (4) That when Paul laid jti fit fcation rear by Faith , without the tnorlrof the Law , he meant a true & lively faith, which only is to be found in that foul , in which the feed of grace is Cown , and which is made partaker of the holy Ghoft , and of the divine Nature , is true; but yet )ultifÿing faith , dol h not formally containe in it a refolurion to obey him , in whom webeleeve, as was shown elfewhere., (S) Then we' fee, that the faith, whereof tamer fpeaketh, is not the fame with that Faith , whereby Paid raid , we are juft fed : And Icing both do not fpeah ofthe Came Faith there can he no appearance of difcrepance. (6) When he faith , we m;ri be juAiled by òur Faith, aç ainfl the charge of being in fidels. F would know what he meaner!) , by this charge of infidelity;: if lie meare, . the charge of not beleeving the Gofpel , he knoweth that a meer affent to __ the truth , will fuflifie from that Charge. If he meare the charge of not receiving & retiing upon Chrift , according to the Gofpel, even that will- be buta particular )uflification from that particular charge; and is rot that juftificatioh from the fentence of the Law, whereof Paul fpeaket h. (7 ) That we Atoll be juftified ( as he faith ) by our Gofpel perfonal holinefs & fincere obedience againft the charge, that we are unholy & wicked , of impenitent & hypocrites, is true; but what can all this fay , for a jutlifica- tion from the fentence of the Law , under which we are all lying by Nature; and of which the Apoftle Paul fpeaketh ? And if games fpeak of juttifica tion by works , in reference to this accufation, he (peaketh of no other kind of jollification , than that which the molt wicked wreatch , yea & the devils are capable of, when, Co wit , they are falfely accufeit of having done fome evil , which they have not done. And how can Mr. Baxter inferre f otn what jau er faith,. (ifhe freak of no other kind of jollification ) that works are required unto our juftification, as to Rate, or unto our generar juilification from the fentenceof the Law, adjudging us to death becaufe of tranfgrefíion ? (8) But he addeth , or elfe rare shall never be adjudged to Sall- nation, that it, fufltjíed by God.' Then the Juflificatio, that tamerfpea- kerh of & that Mr. Baxter meaneth , is final Salvation : And we willingly grant, that there mutt be perfonal holinefs & fincere obedience before this, and that no wicked or impenitent pei fon , or hypocrite shallbe adjudged to Salvation. But the julli"hcation , which Pattltreateth of, is different from this, though it be the lure way tí) this, feing all who are luflifréd , shall be. thus laved. Thus we fee , that according to Mr. Baxter , the meaning of la-- mes is , the fame with Paul's , when he faith Heb, 12: t 4. Follow peace with all 'new&hohnofr, without which no man shall fee the Lord. And then , tamer IIpeaketh nothing of that jollification, whereof Paul treatch' & this is, what we fay ;. whence it is manifest, that thereis no appearance of contradiäion betwixt the two holy writers. But that we way come to tome further clearoefs in this matter we mua fee ,
