Therefore he oppofeth faith & works , & denieth that to faith, which he afcribed unto works : though by confequence he put he- reby adifference betwixt a dead faith , & a working faith; Yet his principa- le Thetis verf. 14. is , that by works , & not by a bare profeflïon of the truth we come to Salvation. And the enquirie profecuted is , whether we have that faith, that will indeed prove Paving, & this can only be evidenced by works, as his whole following difcourfe evinceth , efpecially when he faith verf. i$. sheen me thy faith without thy works, if I will shew my faith by ,ny- works. And verf. zo. when he faith , faith without works is dead& verf. 26. that', it is as dead , as a body is without breath or Spirit. And this he fully confir- meth by the following inftances of Abraham & Rahab. From what is (aid, it is apparent, how little ground there is to think, that there is any real appearance of contradiEtion betwixt Paul & lames ; & how needlefs it is, in order to ayreconciliation , to fay with Paptßs, that Paul, fpeaketh ofa firfi juflifìcation & games of fecond: or with others , that Patrl- fpeaketh of_jußification, asbegun, &tames of jufiificationas continued, ot` with Socinianr, that Paul denieth juftification by the works of the Law , la- mes affirmeth juftification by the works of the Gofpel.
