But more fully to difcover the vanity of this fuppofition, let as fee , what can be alleiged from the feveral parts of this patffage , for juflification by works, from verf itis laid. Faith alone cannot fave , bat is unprofitable; but yet faith & works is profitable d r twill fave. Anf. This nmketh nothing for juftification by works ; laecaufe it is dented , that whatever is requìfìre befo- re Salvation is requifite alfobefo:e juflification , for if fo, no man could b: faid to be juflified , as long as he lived. But next, the faith , whereof lv mes here fpeaketh , availeth not to Salvation , becaufe it is not of the right kinde, & we fay aifo, that this faith availeth not to puttification , becaufe it isbut meet empty profeffion, deceiving & pufing up & it is but a faith, that a man faith he bath. But the maine ground of this apprehenfion is verf. 21, 22, 23, &c. for it is objected that it is exprefly faid , that Abraham was j unified by works. Anf. That it is fo faid, we grant; but the difference is about the fenfe & meaning , in which it is faid fo. 'We have shown, that the meaning is. That by works Abraham was declared, proved & manifefled to be a juflified perfon, and one that had a true & lively faith; for it is added , that hereby the Scripture was fulfilled declaring him to have been juflified by faith , or that he belee- ved God, & it was accounted to him for Righteoufnefs. And this is it, which others have called juflificátion before men, in oppofition to juftifica- tion before God , that is , a juftification declared & mantfefled to the mans own cnnfcience & to others , & not the .juflification before God in its can - fes. And this Mr. Baxterleemeth to have miflaken in his Aphorifines, when he argued againfl this juftification before men, as it it had been meerly a ju- flification from Mens Accufation , & not the true juftification before Qod as evidenced & proved to men : And when we (peak of juflification in this fenfe , we do not make the world lawful judges of our Righteoufnefs before God , or in reference to the Law of God , or fay , that they are competent, or capable judges: But we only fay , that by works oÎ obedience Faith & Ja- flification by Faith is evidenced.
