Therefore he faith , that faith is dead being alone , becanfe it is dead , as to the ufe i purple of juf?ifying This appears from his compari- fon in the former verf. i¢. that this is the death he fpeaks. of ; d7 fo works make faith alive , as to the attainment ofits end of jufliflcation. 13ní. If it be thus , how could he then fay before , that faith was the principal part of the Condition ? can that be the principal part of the Condition , which is dead& ufelefs without the other , & mutt be quickened , in order to its ufefulnefs by the other: I would think that other looked rather like the principal pert, and moft confiderable & necef fry, feingthis were but a dead Cypher without it. But the truth is , the Apottle,, as is laid,_ bath a far other defigne , & sheweth , that that faith , which they pretended unto, asfufficíent to ground their.conciufion of their juftification, & hope of Salvation, was no true faving faith at all , but a dead thing & fo no works could make it of any ufe 'as to luttification ; becaufe it behoved firttto flow from another principle, even fror i a principle of faving grace; and then it -would evidence & prove i.tfelf to be of the right kind, by good works, that would flow from it. But faith he. When the Apofile faith, that faith didwórk in & with his works, it clearly aimeth at fuels a working in di with, as,naketh than conjunct in the market ju fttfying. Anf. No fuch matter; for the Apoftle is only there shewing ( as the whole context clearerh ) that Abraham's faith was another fort of faith , than that , whereupon they relyect ; even a faith that did prompt to the molt difficulte duties , when the call of God came , & fo did wOrk in & with his performances ; but not in order to juttification , for he was juftified already , many yeers before this. He addeth. And when he faith, that Faith was made perfe .t with works , it is not only a manifefiing to be perfeti , But as the habite is perfected in,its acts , be- caufe they arc the end to which it tendeth : 6" as marriage is perfected per congref- funi d55 procreationem ; pr any Covenant, when its Conditions are performed. Anf. The whole of the context sheweth , that faith was perfected purely , as to its manifettation, as by the like expreffion is clear z.Cor.iz: 9. Col, 4: 1[2. Mat. 5: 48. Nay , though It were granted, that faith were perfected by works as the end to which it teudeth , that would fay nothing for the inte- reft of faith in juftification , but in Salvation ; let is be granted, that jufti- fication is perfected by faith without works , as marriage is by confent,with- out what he addeth, & we have what we delire. That works area Condition ofentering into Covenant , or of the Covenant, in order to juflfication, as required before juftification , is Rill denied. That the continuation of juftification hath other media or Condi- tions, than the. beginning hath , is not yet made apparent : far lefs can any fuch thing be drawn from this paffage to có itén,ance the fame, the Apottles fcope not being to fpeak to any fuch thing; nor can it be fuppofed , that he looketh on fuch, whole proud conceits he was here deprefliitag n as already Q.g q 2 juiti-
