John Forbes his Arguments, againit the Imputation of Chrift's aaive obedience, examined. With a View of Wendelin'sreafonings againif ir. ,Ohn Forbes in h is Treatife tending to clear the doEtrine of ju fli ficatian Chap, 2q,. pig. 93. &c. cometh to fpeak of the. ma ter of our Righteoufnefs, that is, that , wherein Chriflis made of God Righteoufnefs unto us ; And Eels us , that this in one word , in the Scripture , is laid to be his obe- dience fRem. 5: 19. But this obedience he reftritteth pag. 94. unto the paffi- ve Obedience of Chrifl only in his death : And by this reftriäion , not only excludeth all his obedience to the Law , but even all his fui errng, in his gate of humiliation ; Yea & his foul-fufferings alfo , for any thing that ap- peareth. He mentioneth a dillin&ion betwixt thofe things , wherein the Righte- oufnefs itfelf itandeth , which is imputed to us , & thofe things, whichare requifire in Chrilt, to the end , that in the other he maybe Righteoufnefs unto us. And this drllinction is good in itfelf; but not rightly applied, when he referreth all to this lafi head , which Chrift did and futfered , except only in his death. He granteth pag. 95. that the word obedience is oft times in the Scripture referred to the whole work of (Thrill's humiliation .: But we do not takeit fo largely here , as to comprehend even his Incarnation ; but as comprehen- ding that, which belonged to his work of Mediation, as our Sponfor , in fatisfying the Law & the Law -giver , for what we were owing, and were not able to pay : No can we fo reftrid it , as he doth : Let us therefore fee his grounds. His firfl ground is this. We are not to efleem Chrifl to be our Righteoufnefs, in any thing , but in that only wherein God hash purpofed , e according to his purpofè ordained , 6' according to his ordinance fee forth Chrifi to be our Righteoufnefs & Propitiation. For the purpofe of God, he citeth Col. 1 : 1 9 , 20, for the Ordi- nance b. Pet. 1 : 1 3 , 1 9 , 2 0 . For his fetting forth Rom. 3: 25, Anf. \We are not to ellecm Chrift to be our Righteoufnefs in any thing , but in that only whe- re in the Scriptures hold him forth to be fo : And in that , wherein the Sci i- pture holdeth him forth to be fo, God purpofed, ordained & fet him forth to be fo : But we mutt not reftri& the whole Scripture to thefe three or four places cited ; If the Scriptures elfewhere pointe forth Chrifl to be our Righ- teoufnefs in other alts , than in his death , all this argueing is to no purpófe. Sure the Scriptures fpeak of his fufferings in foul,& of his being made a curie for us, & of his being obedient even to the death,of his being made under the Law
