WE havealreadyconfidered the Corinrhians, according to what they were by their own voluntary corruption, Let tee now take noaicef them , ae what they are by grace. They were black and uncordely of themfelves, but Can&ífied and made beautifullby the grace of God. Now this grace of God vouchfafed unto them is expreffed in threeparticulars, Ye areWafhed, Ye are San- efifred, Ye are?reified. Some make this difference between them, That thefirft priviledge,Yeare n,,,Aed,is a general comprehending both SanetificationandJufìifi . cation;aslithe Apoftie hadfirlkexpreffedhimfelf in the general, and then dittnbuted thisgeneral into twofamous branches thereof : and indeed wallaingor cleaning is fometimesufed for thetaking away of the guilt of fin, and then it is the famewith jollification; as whenDavidprayethGod would wafh him&makehim clean, Pfa. 51. and fomtimes its ufedfor thecleanfing from the filthand power offin,in which tenfe its the famewith fan&ification : and in this refpe&, ¡ faida a. God calsupon yernfatem towafh her, and tomake her clean : This maywell be received : But I rashes got wichother Expofitors, that make the Apoále ufe a gradation, naming thofe priviledges in the order God bellowed them upon them : and the firif is Waffling, that is Regeneration ; theType whereof and Seal is Bapcifm ; which was theHI thingdone to them, when received into the Church : fo that themea- ning is ; But ye are fpiritualllywafhedand cleanfed from the filth anddominionof their fans, a Seal whereof wasyour Baptifm. Then the fecond degree is Sanctified, which is a further graceof God, not only regenerating, but makingus holy unto the Lord, and caufing us to walk as chofe that are fet apart for God, fromall commonand prophane ufe. The one lathe fruit, the other is the tree s fo that the ApoRle may very well put fan&ification firá, becaufe to our tenfe and apprehenfion it is fo. As for that interpretation of Papiás and others, that make luirfied,to be theobtainingof a further degreeof righceoufnefle, and increafing in holinetfe, we reje& as erroneous. Now this threefold mercy is am- plified by the meritorious caufe, 7s the 2',gme of the Lord /efns.
