TheGodlgareWa/hedandSanttfrl'i. 3 ous, humble and holy Manner ufe them, and make mentionof them : So that the fwearerand th'e curter, howfoever hemaymitigate his fin, that he didit in his paflion, and he cloth not think of it , yet hecar, never pretend to Sanctificati- on;for wherethat is, itBoth rule the heartwith fuch an holy and reverential awe of Gods Majelty, that he never makes mention of hires but with Religious and tremblingaffeelions. Its admirable what the Heathens have been in this very pointof fwearing, how unwilling to do it, though in a lawful thing; and all becaufe of a devoutapprehenfion they had of that SacredMajefly to whom they did appeal m their oathes. O then, what fhame and confufion fhould this be to Chriftians; there is fcarce any oldman; or yongman, any rich man, or poorman, but given to this detetlable fin offwearing, for which a man maypro- perly be called prophane, becaufe he bath low, defpicable and irreverent thoughts of God. Another dutyof godlyman fandified, is tokeepholy his Sabbaths, as you read in many piaces;fothat the loofe, carelefs and concèmptuous defpifing of ir, is an argumentof an unfanetified heart : The godly makeit their delight; and they keep a fpiritual Sabbath fromtheir fns, and by this.means, their fouls ,enter into an holycelt that day : But the ungodly man, hejudgech there days a burthen,a trouble, he longs to have them over, that he may to the world, or his lulls again : Try then thy Sanctification, by thy holy eaeem and prize of thy holy duties, which are for theencreafe ofgod linefs, andpromotingof that : When thou comeftCO pray, to hear; to keep his Sabbaths, with thy thoughts full of theworld, the love thereof, or delight therein; thou artno wayspre pared to fandifieGod. Laflly, To fandifie, is tohave all the faculties and, powers of the foul, re- newed by holy principleswithin, and thereby carried out to do thofe things which areholy, and after an holy manner : And thus all thofethat are regene- rated are wrought upon, their underflandings are made holy, their wills holy, their love an holy love, theirgrief and fear holy : This is the chiefmercy, above all Riches,Honors and Greatnefs ; without this Sandification, everyman, though alive, is dead ; though rich, is poor; though happy, is miferable. And for the betterdifcovery of it, confider : Firft, the efficient caufe to which this is peculiarly appropriated ; and that is, L. . The Holy Spirit of God, called, TheHoly Spirit, Ephef 1.13. Rom :r.4. 2 Their: Thè e:Kcieëè 2.13. and, The Spirit of San£lifcation, becaufe peculiarly appropriated to him coufe of San. to work this in us ë So thatif thoudefireft thisSanctification, fain thou wouldit ltiflèatiou. have a fandified heart; and fandified affections ;,O it troubles thee that thou art not ailedby fuch holy principles; lift up thyeyes to heaven, pray that God would vouchfafethis holy fpirit to thee, which will work like fire; confuming that drofs of corruption in thee. No wonder, if under much preaching; many judgements of God, peopleremain prophane and bofe, di(folute in their fins;, for neitherMinifterorAngels, can infufe this holy foundation into them, its the proper work of Gods Spirit : Take heedtherefore of grievingor refitting this fpirit, and that you do, when ye live infins agaioft convietion, againftthe; plain declaration of Gods word; when that informeth, direeteth judgeth and condemneth thee, yet thou wilt go on, and be obftinate in thy fins i 'this is the fad cafe of many thoufands, who thereby chafe away the fpirit of Sandi- fication from them. Now that God is more willing to bellow his fpirit, upon' thofe that ask him in a right manner; then any father is able, or willingto give any neceffary good thing to his childe, appéareth Mat.7. Ifye being wicked know how togivegood things, Igor, much rather willyour Father is heaven; gip,' his fpirit to thofe thatask, him : O then fay,. This is the neceffary thingsthis is tote fought forin thefirft place. b. Secondly, The initrument of this Sanctification, the means whereby God The mu to willwork it, is the word: Thusoar Saviour prayeth, That God Wouldfànîtife meet of 4,r¡ hid Difciples&yhiotruth, ho:Word Was truth,.John 17.
