384 The Godly are Wa/hedand Santtiftèd. S E C r, VIII, for the obtainingof this, but by theword : This is the Chariot of the Spirit, here we muff expo& its workings. As it had heed a vain thing in Naaman, to expert the deanfingofhis leprofie inanywater but in forda i,fo it is as fool'rfh and abfurd to expedfanetification by any humane rites& inventions ofinen,a number of which are introducedinpopery. Now as Gods fpirit onely efficiently lanctifieth, and not humane power or freewill ; fo the Divine truths of God are itiftituted Mediums forthis glorious effe6t, and no other fuperftitious defignments made by men : Oh then,if ever thou wouldfi be fanftified, be a diligent hearer of the word, hear in feafon and out of feafon, as we are commanded to preach: Come to this fountain often tobe wafhed in, throw thy felf frequently in this fire, to get thy drofs out. The effeds of Gods word are admirable, elpecially in this point, to fandifie thee, to make thee have holy affeétions, and holy principles, and holy ends and aims in all thou doeft. As thofe that are much in the Sun, theycannot but be much coloured by it ; fo thofe that are in read. ingoften, in hearing often, in praying often , they will finde filch an holy change upon them, fich admirable effefts on their lives, that therewill be as much wonder at them, as there were of thofe who were dead and rotting in their graves, yet eaifed by the mighty power of Chrift: As therefore there is no hope of that tree that is near no waters fide, that groweth in a barren wil- dernefs; fo there is no hopes of ever being fanftified from thofe who feldom or never cometo hear the word, or if they do, its out of formality, cuftom, and with fo much dulnefs, flrepinefs and diltraftions, that their very outward de- portment manifefis much contempt and irreverence towardsGod ? Do their men come tobefanélified? do Inch comewith this grandexpeftation, Of unholy to be madeholy. 3 Thirdly, The Meritorious cauff, which procureth this great priviledge at The meritori- Gods hand, is left& Chrifl r Thus the Apoftle addeth, In the Name of the Lord oils cade of left&; fo that one great effeft of thofe Agonies and Sufferings which Chrift San&if ca. underwent, was to obtain Sanftification: Chrill flied his blood, thot he might poor- chafe to himfelf an holy people, Tit.3. Oh then, how fhould this make you highly efteem it I Was it a fmall or a light thing for which Chrift indured all chafe torments? could wenot be fanftified, but byhis blood ? why then doeft thou make no matter of it? where is the man that cryethout, Oh Chrift dyed, and yet I am not fandied ? Chrift bath fhed his blood, and yet I am not made holy. 4' Fourthly, Confider the extent of this Sanftification, its univerfalrhromcut: The extent of I ra God ebe aniïi ed throughout, infpirit, Sanftification: Pre l î f g fP ,foul and body, r Theft 5.3. The fpirit, that is in the choiceff and moti fublime part .of a man, that needeth San= elification; even thefe Heavens are defiled, this Sun bath black and foul (pots. Hencewe readof Carnal minder, Corrupt underflanaing.r, andtherefore we need the Sanftification of them, yea, thismuff be the firft work of Sanftification: its yourminde, your judgement, your reafon, that is fo great an enemy to God; What hinders, but that chou fhouldefhgo out prefently, and give thy felf up unto all holy obedience? but thyminde, thy judgement is not fatisfied, that bath this or that carnal plea; fo that of all parts, this eye, this underfiand- int muff be light, elfe all thebody will be dark : Oh therefore that Godwould fan&ifie yourmindes, your underflandings, make them holy, thenwould your affedions and your converfations quickly become changed. Then the next thing to befanftified, is the foul ; that is, theaffections and pallions, as com- monly Interpreters think ; and indeed, thefe are like the wheels in the Chariot, likethe fire among the Elements; if thefe benotfanftified, a man is carried up and down lik a flip in the form, without Pilot or any conduit: And betides, theft affeftions are very unruly and malterful, therefore the fanftification of them is more requifite. Laftly, there is the body, and that allo muff be fan. dified,; viz. Organically, as it is the initrument of the foul : Thus the tongue, the
