3 4 The Godly are Walkedand Sawfáifted. S a c called Holy, t Cor,7; in oppofition co Heathens, and unbelievérs: but this is not the fandification in the Text, nor that to which thepromifeof glory dolt belong. Let us thereforeconfider the figns by which we come toknow who are truely fan&ified. r: And firft , They whoarefo, have the prig of God effetivaßy, and powerfully Thole that dwelling in them. Thatas wicked men have the Divel filling their hearts, and he « Sanftified reigneth'in them , wherebythey are carried out to all wickedneffe , with delight itof spi- and boldneffe : Thus croftthat are fanftified are full of the Holy Ghoft , being o God dwelling in partakersofhis operations and fo are thereby fitted for all holinefie. Hence it them. iscalled the ¡flint offaialificatien, and the holy#iris, becaufewhere thè fpirit of God dwelletb, there it fanftifieth , and makes holy. Alas the greateft part of Chriftians are deffitute of Gods Spirit ; yea, theyhave fcarce heard whether there bean holy Spirit or not : And thereupon they have nothing but cuftomarineffe, formality, and education, which do ac them in all religious duties. But as inwor- kingof Miracles,fo'humane flrength or power could enable them [hereunto; they were onely done by power from the HolyGhoft ; So neither to loveGod, to be- lieve in him, tomortifie fin, canbe doneby the foie Ilren, ggth of free-will : but it mull be the Spirit of God changingand new-moulding/the heart, Oh thenconfi- der this , all you whogo in a round, prayand hear, and hear and pray, in a general( cullomary way : The fpirit ofGodis not in thefe; which yet is like the foul to the body : like fire to the facrifice : like Windes to the Chip ; Out duties and hearts are but Cifterns, that is the Fountain. There is never a Duty accepted, if the fpirit of God benot working therein, Rom. 8. The fpirichelpethour infirmi- ties , andGod heareth the voyce ofhis own fpirit. Till therefore thou art made partaker of Gods fpirit , all thy external righteoufneffe and holinefle isbut a fha: dow and nofubi-tance. It is an image orpidure,no real life at all. Oh then, How far are prophane, diffolpte men from this Grace offan&ification ? Doch the holy fpirit of God dwell inthee? Doth not theunclean fpiritrather livein thee, whole heart and life is made like a very hell? Is it the holy Spirit of God that inciteth thee to curie, to (wear, to.lufts? Ohblafphemy to think, or fay fo. Let then all ungodly, and foul wretchesbe afbamed and confounded. within themfelves. It was the Dis el that deuired to enter into f wine : The Spirit of God appeared in an innocent and harmkffe Dove : Some men are fo far from having the Spirit of fanftificatìon, that they mock and derideseit, yea-malfciaufly oppofe ig but chofe are referved co a dreadful judgement. Secondly , Tholethat arefareaqua; have readyandwilling obedience to the truth and-commands off god : Therefore it is calledSanc`lificationafthe Spirit to Obedi- ence , I Pet. t. a. It is impoffìble tohave Sanctification, and not to have a arm- ful! and willing obedienceto all Chofe duties that are required of us. Doth God fay to the proud, Be humbled', if fandified, heobcyeth imediately? Doth God fay to the 1 rvhane, Be foberandheavenly; when fandified he yeilds immediately; ¡mouth that all.thofe bearers who live in vifibledifobedience to the word ofGod preached , they have no evidence of their fandificationt Obedience is better ebenf . . trife,. God looks to that more then praying, hearing, orcoming to the Ordï nances t Doft thou fay as Chrift? Lo, ¡come todo th, will, O Gad, thyLaw as writ- ten Within my heart. Thus David being fandified, profeffethhis ready and wil- lingobedience untoGod: And 'Patel silo , Lord, What wilt then have-me lode? Ad.9.6.He gives his heart up to God like á blank, let God fee down whathe plea- feth : As fire cloth melt the tougheftIron , and makes it in any frame you would have it, Thus the fpirit offandh$cation doth melt and affe&the foul , that it be- comes cheerfully obedient in dutiesof the greateft felf-denial, and contrariety to flefhandblood. Oh then think not within thy Pelf, I hear thus much, I come to Church thus often; but what obedience is there in thy life 7° That crowneth all thy' duties; that is the gloryofall religion.
