272 The Evil of Evils, Or the he hath not guilt upon his fpirit, and that breach betweenhis God and he as I have. May be the world knows not where his (boo pincheth him, and what fadens his fpirit : many men that have comforts about them ( though they cannot be Paid to enjoythem) yet their hearts be troubled anddifquieted, and nobodie knows the mat- ter ; Oh there is guilt upon their fpirits they think within themfelves, Oh, if it were with meas it is with fuck a one, it would be well, lure theyhave not that guilt I have, ifthey had they couldnot but be difquieted as I am. Again, Guilt brings roofulfelir upon tinConfcie zce ; no ¡ffiíclîon can bring fach fear ;rpcss the confcience. Though there fhould be never filch troubles andfears, andconfufions in the world, alas this is not fo terrible and fearful as that fear the guiltie confciencebath. Take a manor woman whole confcience is delivered from the guilt of fin, luch a one, though Heaven andEarthMould meet, is not fo much troubled. Certainly Bre- thren,in thefe great fears amongif us, that you befkar'dat everything, it is partly becaufe you have not throughly made up your peace be- tweenGod andyour fouls, and Come guilt lies upon your fpirits andconfciences; and this in- deed will make every thing terrible to you, if that lie there : Guilt upon theconfcience make§ God,the thoughts ofGad feem terrible. Now it is a greaterevil for thecreature not to be able to look uponCod,&rohave thoughts ofGod with- out beingpierced with terror, than to be under any álliOion;in theworld;forrows, fears anddif- grace,,,
