Exceeding Sìnfidne,ß'ofsin. 311 4nfr. r. That at firfl when God doth ,be- gin to workupon the foul , God doth ufually move_us from felfmofi; and thefe felfgrounds works noftto takemen and women off from thealts oftheir fin ( from outward,a6ls at leaft) and to flop them from the comrnifiîonoffinand bringthem to themeans ofgrace ; felfmotives God makes ofe ofat firfi : but yet the work is not done till the foulgoeth beyond thefe : it is good for menandwomen to abfiain from fin up- on any grounds ; there is fo much evil in fin, that uponany groundsmen and women abftain- ing from fin, it is well, but only except it be fuch a ground, that the ground it fel fbea grea- ter finthan the fin abfiain from. But yet the work is not done.: Therefore 2. Know, That though when grace is come into the foul, Gad:ufeth fellarguments, and fell motives to further theabfiaining from fin (and it is Lawful to do fo) yet Pelf motives, and felfarguments be not the chief and highefr of all. But 3. That which I molt pitch upon, and mote fully anfwereth this Queftion is this; That if we didbut know whereinour felfgood conffis, which is certainlyto live toGod; our felfgood is in this, not only the glory of God, but our owngoodandhappinefs , our felfgood is inour living to God, that infinite ftrfi-Being of all things. Now ifwe underfiand this, I fay, that thingwhich is our felfgood, we may make to be our highefiaim in abfiaining from fin, and in doinganygoodsthat thingwch is our felfgood: Hh 2 bute
