12 4 fiofpel Xemision. DoEtrine ofAffurance ofPardon : We preach that a man may not only have fome good hopes that his fins are pardoned ; but we fay God bath revealed fuch a fulnefs of riches of grace in the Gofpel , that a man may have certain and full affurance of the pardon of his fin ; as if he heard a voice from Heaven, fpeaking to him by name, thy fins are par,. Boned ; or as if when Chrift in the days of his flefh , faid to any one, fon, go in peace, thy fins are pardoned; certainly , there maybe as full affurance of pardon of fin, by the wit- nefs of the Spirit of God, as if fuch a voice came from Heaven : But our Adverfaries fay, open but that gap, and 'tis an open way for men to take liberty to commit any fin; What need men care what fins they commit , when they know they are pardoned ? that has been objefted againft us ; but now we fay, there is fuch a vertue in the grace of God going along with pardoning of fin , that heals the foul , as well as comforts the foul ; we anfwer it thus but you take away our anfwer, and difgrace that bleffed Do- ftrine of Pardon of Sin ; for wherein does it appear, there is fuch a healing power in the affurance of the par- don of fin ? If it be fo, then you would walk more ftricily than any man in the world can do, in the time of the great- eft horror of Confcience that pofiible can be and this would bring an honour to the Dotrine of Affurance ; but you by finning after pardon, How do you difgrace this bleffed Doctrine, and take away the anfwer out of our mouths ? So much for the preent, to be fpoken to thofe that dijhonour the pardoning mercy ofGod by finning after pardon. CHAP.
