The fourth Rule for trial of your Eftates is this, That when youfndtheWord onyour fide in any thing, never let go your hold of the Word , when you are perfwaded the Word (peaks well of your fide in fuch or fuch a thing , never do any thing againít it ; as we muff not receive any comfort but by the Word, fo we muft not rejedt any comforts but by theWord ; forcemay fay, I find fomething in the Word that makes for me, but I am afraid I am not thus and thus qualified ; but do you find any thing in the Word that gives you ground to think fo ? we must reft upon the Word both ways, as we muft not receive any thing to build our com- forts on, but it muff be from the Word ; fo we muft not re- ceive any thing to trouble us but it mull be from the. Word ; it mull be the Word muft wound men ; for the Confciences of men and women are under the power of no creature, but the Word : Now as there is no power in any creature in the world to raife a dejeted foul, and to comfort a troubled Confcience truly but the Word ; So the people of God are toknow, that they are fo above the power of all other things, that nothing in the World fhould trouble them but the Word only : as they fhould account it a weak vain thing to reft in the opinion of others for the comfort of their fouls , that are in a good condition by what they find out of the Word ; fo they fhould accgunt, it a vain thing to reft on their own conceits in time of trouble, or in the Paying of o- thers, befides what they have out of the Word ; the foul fays, I am afraid my {late is not good ; Put O myfoul , is there any thing in the Word that fays thus ; that they that are thus and thus are hot pardoned: As I mutt not conclude I am pardoned, but mull bring .fomething out of the Word that fays 19'
