256 on the Excellency of the Soul. filled with the wrvh of God, to have the underaandinà to bee filled withwhat may ìncreafe torment in that, and for the confcience, to have the worm gnawing, wh;ch ne- verdieth; and to have the thoughts employed, and running ,upon thofe things that will bee fo hideous unto them, and to have the will continually croffed by God himfelf, and to have the heart finking under the wrath of the infinite God in defpair for ever. Brethren/ the foul of man, it is a ve- ry large veffel, and becaufe wee know but little of the large extent of our fouls, therefore. it is that wee are fo little fenfible of the lofs of them, or of the pain and tor- ment they are capable of, or liable unto : But as the foul is larger than the body to take in comfort ; fo is it larger than the body likewife to take in pain, ntfery, and wrath: ive fhould bee fenfible of fuch an expref ion as this ; to have the body in all the members of it to bee filled with fire, fo as to bee all on a hot fiery bure:ing coale, and that to all eternity.; this you would think could not but bee an extreme mifery : But the fouls capacity is far larger than the bodies : And to have the foul filled in every faculty of it with the wrath of God, it is far greater pain, than to have the body in fuch a condition, which is the condition of a loa foul. Further, it doth confia in having the power of God flxetched forth to bring evil and wrath upon it, and, that to the utmoa, Rom. 9. 22.
