on the Excellency of the Soul. 267 So it Mould bee here, whatever wee lofe, wee are to bee comforted in this, that our fouls are not gone and loft: It is a notable Scripture, in t Pet. q.. verf. lift. Wherefore let ethem that Puffer according to the will of God, commit the keep - 4tng of their fouls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Crea- tor. As if the Apoftle fhould fay , you are like to meet with great fufferings, you may likely bee deprived of all you have, of your effaces, and of all your comforts, and may come to fuller much, yet commit the keeping of your fouls to him in well doing, as unto a faithful Creator : Why, they might have faid, but what (hall become of o- ther things ? if ftorms, and ternpefls, -and fufferings come, ,whist (hall become of our eflates? what (hall become of our livelihoods, and of our bodies ? why faith the Apoflle , as for them, for your eflates, for your bodies, it may bee they may perifh; you are not fo much to look after them, but commit " the keeping of your fouls unto him, as unto a faithful Creator. The Apofile here exhorts them what to do in times of fufferings, and by what bee doth exprefs, bee doth imply that theyfhould take no care for outward e- flare, and body; it is enough that your fouls are well, corn- mitthe keeping of your fouls to him, as unto a faithful Creator, wee have enough if that - bee fafe : You know in time of danger, as fires, and other times, if á man hath any precious thing, bee carries that prefently to fome fpeci- al-friend, and commits the keeping of that to him; his writings and fuch things , wherein his eflate is moft : So faith the Apoflle, in the time of publick danger, Take care to commit the keeping 9f your fouls to him, as unto a faithful Creator, and you are well enough.
