Exhortation to meeltneffe!of flirit. 203 eternally,we read of íì'4ofes though he be commended to be the meekett man that ever liv'd upon the earth, yet one froward pail onate a& .of his (hut him out of Canaan,though in the whole courfe of his life he was fo meeke that God commends him to be the meekest of all, yet (hut out of Canaan for one aút ; fanaan you know was a type of Heaven, though No fes was par- doned fo as he was receiv'd to Heaven, yet as for Canaan God would not hearken to his prayer,but would take that advantage of him to (hew his difpleauitre againft that a& of his of paflion, and (hut hini;out of Canaan : take heed left that froward heart of yours (hut you out Of Heaven eternally : you mighti- ly cry out of thofe that are drunkards, you are no fuch, and you think that 'cannot-amid with grace, they are thüt out of the Kingdome of Heaven,why should there notbe as much danger in a drunken pa;lion, as in drunkenneffe by beer or wine : 'Certainly the drunkennetfethat comes by patlion, doth caufe often as many as great fins as that that comes by wine or beer you would thinke it a foule thing if it could be raid, that once a year you fhouid be overcome with drunkenneffe, ô how of- ten have you been drunk with paflion, and that drunkenneffe may be as grievous to the Spirit of God, as if you were drunk- en otherwife by beer or win:, and therefore look upon it as a greater evill then you are aware of. But we proceede to the Ufe of Exhortation. Blelfed are the meeke, Let us all learne to he of meeke and quiet fpirits. Ì remember in the 6 of Numbers it's faid ofthe Nazarites, thatas they muff drink no wine, fo the Text faith, they muff drtnkno vinegar neither, The Nazarites were a peo ple feperated for God, from thence they had their name from feperation : And all the Saints of God they are Nazarites ; as Chrift was a Nazarite, fo all that are Chrtfts are Nazarites, are feperated for Gods people, feparated- from others, the Lord feparates the godly man for himfelfe : Now this is the law upon all Nazarites, they mutt drink no vinegar, that is, they mutt riot be of vinegar fpirits, of lower fpirits, but mull Ddm
