What meant by righteoufnèffe. s 22I that are full and have aboundance, and to thinke them to be bleffed, but be not deceived, woe to fueh as are full, but you are bleated ùi thefe your' great wants and extremities ; and fo they take this bleifedneffe out of the old Teflament,as the for- mer of meekneffe, itt the 37 Pfai: a L. from whence Chrift takes that of meekneife : and this of hungring and thi rflinn, out of the 65 Ifa: 13. ver: But to ref+in this interpretation is not my purpofe : -- And therefore we muff proceed further ; for the obie& hereof their hunger and thin+ leads us further then fo,for they hunger and thirft after righteosfneffe:Yet I con - feffe I find very learned Interpreters, and Godly men, inch as Calvin and Mufculi s they carry thefe words no further then thus, Bleid'ed are they that in their great extremity doe bur . hunger and thirst to have that that is tit for them, that that is right : Thofe than are Godly and brought to a -low condition, and oppreffed, they hunger and thirst that they might have righteous dealings in the world, that they may be dealt with- all righteously: and they goe no further then this, and you know Mr.Caiv n is one that. doth (ufttally) hit the fence as right as any, and is as fpirituall as any Interpreter ordinarily; yet I fay in thefe words he goes no further then this. By hunger and thirf, that clearely is meant earneft detires, defires that rife out of pain, from the' fence of the want of the thing that is, de- fired, from whence the delires grow very ftroig and earneft, for no delires are fo ftrong and earneft as the delires of the, hungry man,or the thirfty man and fò do hunger and thirst after rsghrc- ouf neff e.Either after righteous dealings, that they maybe dealt withall righteously ; or that there might ;be righteoutnetfe in the world, that's a little higher then they go :they'onlyfpeak of hungring and thirfting after this, that they themfelves may be dealt withall righteously, and have righteoufneffe, but T think we may go further even in the interpretation of this righreou nefs; to.fpeake of righteoufneffe as from your, dealing, f uch as hunger and thirff that tighteoufnefs might prevail in the world, and this indeed I verily think to be one fpeciall thing intended by the holy Ghof+, Chrift he lookes upon his Difcit les, and as if he .fhould fay to them, you are like CO meet with much un- righteous
