?leached Auguff 17. 1662. 133' lleafrre in the legs of a man. The Lord taketbpleafkre in them that fear him, in thole that hope in his Mercy. Nothing attiaas his eye and heart, but his own Similitude and Refemblance ; and therefore where he fees peaceable difpohtions, that is, that which indears the foul to him, and'makes it aimable in his eyes. You may judge of his delight in peace, by this; it, is that grace which in an efpecial manner prepares us for communion with him ; for, we can never reallyhonour nor enjoy him, milers we bring tohim thole difPoti- tions, Which (if I may fo ('peak) are in himfelf. And therefore it is no wonder that thole have little peace of Confcience, who make fo: little confcience of peace. You_know, when God appeared to Elijah, he did not appear inthe Storm, nor in the Fire, but in the fraallJtil voice ; and when Elifha was tranfported with anger, he was fain to allay that pall-ion by Mufick, that fo he might be.prepared for the holy motions of the Spirit; he called for an Inftrument, and then the Spirit maed in him. I bring it for this end, to thew bow.God delights inpeace, and he will onely maintain communionwith thole that are of calm and peaceable fpirits. So much way as we give to raw anger, id much proportionably do we let in the Devil, and calf. out the God of Peace. Now, the rea ion why thisTitle is given to God, is.upon a double. vcount, partly with refpe& to the Blood of the everlafting Covenant, which made peace between God and us ; partly with reipe& to the: Covenant it felt, which is founded in that Blood. (i.) In refpe& ofthe Blood ofthe EverlaflingCovenant: For it was the Blood ofChrifl that hath fprinkled dads Throne, and made peace in Heaven. You thall read therefore, when Chrift came into tht world, ris laid, (Luk2.4.) that the Heavenly Hoff appeared and fang, Glory to God in thehigheff,on earthpeace,&c. Since thefall, God. and Man are enemies; there is a reciprocal enmitybetween God and Man : God hates the creature as it is unholy, and man hates God as he is juft, the Avenger offin, the Author ofthe Law Now, Chriff was theVinpire that compofed this difference,. he was God &Man in one perfon, and fo being allied to both, he was a fit perfon to recon- cile both. He was (asjob fpeaks) a Days-man. between.us. He hath paid every farthing that was due : for he did not compound with God, but paid the utmott that was due to him. He it is that hatli reconciled us to God by the power ofhis Spirit, in changing and' renewing our natures, and creating in us thole difpofitions which. are like to God, fo that his Blood is the foundation of this peace. And now,,God appears to us, not as a ConfumingFire,. butas a Re- frefhing Light, full ofUninefs, and Serenity and Peace towards us. Chrilt
