220 Mr.. Medes' .r Sermon. throughChrifi our Head and Husband : The feed of peace, it true, it is Town in the foul in Union, but then it takes root downward, and brings forth fruit upward. Spiritual peace will never be obtained, if communion with God be not maintained that gives comfort in the mida of all forromf, and fatisfies all doubts, and recotnpences all wan-s. Loe this is the fruit ofCom- munion, with God. Fourthly, be good at all times, but of all, bell in bad times : many Chriftians lore their peace, by remitting of.their grace, and let bole their Reins of Religion to avoid the cenCures of a crooked generation. A chriftian zeal fhould be like the winter® fire, that burns the hottea when the Air iscooleft ; or like the Lil- ly, that looketh beautiful ,- though among thorns, 10 thotild a Child of God though among fanners. Fifthly, in all conditions chute ffferings rather than finning ; Ifever you would have peace chute fuffering rather than finning; he that values peace with, God, or peace with Confcience, he muff make this his choice : thus Daniel rather choofed to be call to Lions then to lode thepeace of his Confcience : the three Children chore rather to burn in the furnace then to bow to the Image : One laid, He would rather goe to hellfree from fin, then to live in Heaven withguilt ofConfcience. (My Brethren) let me a lit- tle enlarge, becaule fuffering may overtake us : for perfecJtion is the genius of the Gofpel therefore let me leave four (bort rules withyou concerning fufferings. See that your cattle be good, your Call be clear, your Spi- rit meek, and your En: right. Suffering cannot bring out peace without either ofthem, but with them all our fufferings (hall be peace. Fiat, let your caufe be gond, its not the blood but the caufe that makes a Martyr : its not for every caufe a Chriftian (hall en- gage to fuffer : every caufe will no more bear fuffering, then e- very little fiream will bear a Ship : nor will Chrifi let go Tweet- refs to every fuffering. t Pet. 4, 15. Let none ofyoufuffer as a Adrur-, darer, or as,a Thief, or as an Evil doer, or as a bufie bidy in other men, meters. To fuffer this, is neither Chriflian-like, nor com fortable. Some fuffer rather as Malefactors then as Chrifis MArtyre. Secondly, Let your Call be clear, its not arnifs to have a good Cattle without a Call : Some may fuffer for the caufe ofGod,and yet Cm in filffering for want ofa Call.
