Preached Auguii 17. 1661.. 29' This may teach us the readieft way to the white Robe, to the RN(e of' Honour, it is to keepus from being defiled with finful praftices certainly they who pleaCe God, he can make the world to honour them ; ifGod approves us, he can make the world approve us too, yet we n& not think to have all men teak well of us : yet this we may fay,if we keep our garments undefiled,we 'hall walk in white in tile eyes ofmen, ifGod fee our garments in the dirt,& /potted with- the filth of the world, it will fpoil the honour we lhould have in the world : as it was laid of "Pins, when his garments were defiled, they called him Satanarius, that is to fay, divellifh : thus it may be, for the Lord hatli a time to take our good name from us, to cattle: our light of honour tube taken from us. And as he bath called us to walk in the white of honour in the- world, fo he doth fometimes cattle us towalk in reproach with the world : theywho defile their garments,loCe their honour with men, and they lore their joy they Ihould have hereafter, Mal. 2. 9. You have departed frommy law, therefore will I make you contemptible in the eyes of all men. It is a defign of the fpirit of wickednefs to draw men to fin, that they may upbraid them, that I conceive is the fenfe ofthe Apofile Gal. 6. 13. For neither they themfelves who are cir- cunicifed keep the Law, but defire to have you circunicifed, that they might glory in your flefh, faith he : Oh there are Come of this wicked fpirit, that would drawmen to filch and Inch wickednels, not that they joy in their returning ; but that they might glory in their flefh, when as they who ftand fait, do. even force a good teffirnony from their enemies : So it was theUnhappy chance ofcr4nrner, the- Pope did perfwade him to fubfcribe, and did he get any honour by it *? No truly, they did upbraid him, and reproach him, and fo he had dyed in a raving condition, had not the Lord been merciful to him. I remember a fpeech of -St. Atifiin, about drinking of Healths : Oh, fay they,'cis upon the Kings Birth-day, and we can- not avoid it ; ifthey deny it, fay they, we Thallbe reproached and fcorned of all men. He gives them many anfwers to it ; but one as I remember was this; God will fo work, that ifyou will not comply with them, they iii their hearts will honouryou; and whereas ifyou did comply with them, they would dilhonouryou; and fayyotarebale fpirited - That is one thing of this point, that keeping clofe to jelus Chi-lit will get you this reward : you fhall walk with him in the white of honour : they (hall Walk in the white ofhonour with his people, and it may be,with theworld too. 2. TheyJhall wal&in white, in the white ofpeace, and joy, and in. ward comfort. . I fbeWed:
