Firft then, for Explanation, I [hall here endeavour to open the two things to you; tlift5 what it is for. a place to be holy, or where- in the nature of the holireis of places confifts; fecondly, what that is that is the foundation or caufe of the holinefs ofplaces, and both thefemull in our difcourfe, and likewife appf enenlion, be aceurate- lydiftinguiPned. Moregenerally, Theholinefs ofa place doth confilf in the fepa, ration thereof, the Petting it apart, the deffinition and difcrirni- nation in the way of fome excellent preheminence, Or the exalting of it beforeandabove all other places : Thus the notion ofthe ho- lines of places is taken in Scripture, Exod. 30. 31, 37,38. you than there read, that the Lord tells them in the 31 verfe, concerning the oyntment that he prefcribed, and likewife the comp°fition of it for his fervice, This[hall be an holy anointingoyl unto me throughout your gene- rations. Mark ye, herein is the holinefs of thepeople, that theywere a differenced and a fevered people. And hence it is you read in Deuteronomy, Chap. 26. v.18,19. that God is there paid to avouch his people, openly to difcover him- felfto affert it that they are his people ; their holinefs was-4 difcrinti- nation, a feparation from the reft of thepeople. And in 'Nut. 7. 6. and 14. 2. you have there the very fame things deicribed and dif- covered untoyou.
