344 VerT An Expofition upon the Boott,of J O B. Chap.3. but his difetteem, and himfelfregardiefs of his day, but Ieremy im- ploys that very word, through which God poured out his wrath and everlatling difpleafure upon the Serpent and the Devil, Gen.3. 14 In each of thefe Ieremy went a (train of impatience beyond lob, and yet holy Ieremy (till. the Lord(faith the fame Prophet,Chap. 8. i4.) bath put us to filence, andgiven us waters of gall to drink,, becaufe we havefinned againJt the Lord. When we remember our own lins, we have reafon to be filent , though the Lord feed us with waters ofgall, bitter waters. And if we be filent, and opeh not our mouths, becaufe we have finned, he bears withohr cry, as we are pained : He knows whereof we are made, and remembers that we are but dutLA little thing troubles our fleth, therefore it is no wonder if fleth and blood cryout in great-troubles,though they be fubdued by grace unto the fpirit. And if God(in this cafe)bear with us, we ought alío to bear with one another, and not to be fcandaliz'd, or take offence, when we fee good men mourning and lamentingunder-the evils which theyendure. He that underltands man, will compa(lionate the forrows, not que(tion the fincerity of a complaining, groaning brother. Thirdly, lob complaineth bitterly, and he curfeth but what loth he curie ? He curfeth his day. Obferve from thence , That Satan with his utmoft power andpolicy, with his ftrongeft temptati- onsand affaults, canneverfully attain his ends upon the children of God. What was it that the Devil undertook for ? was it not to make lobcurie his God ? and yet when he had done his word, and fpen t his malice upon hirn , he could but make lob curie his day; This was far fhort of what Satan hoped: Doubtlefs when the De- vil heard the word, curfed, corheout of lob's mouth, he then began to prick up his ears and triumph, furely now the day is mine, now he will curie his God ; but at the fall of that word, curfed be the day,Satans hope falls, and down goes he : that word day,was dark- nets to the Devil, and as the fhadow of death ; he failspf his end, and is confounded, he goes away athamed, and hath not a word -more to fay,but leaves his friends to fay the ref. Thegates ofHell {hall never prevail againft thofe who are founded on freegrace, and the Rock Jefus Chri(t. Fourthly obferve, That God loth gracioufly forget, andpafs by the dii empered Jpeeches and bitter complainings of his fervants under great afrfiions. lob fpake this curie, but when God cones to queítion with lob , we donot hear a word or tittle of this
