Chap. 3. AnExpofition upon the BookofJ OB. VerC 6. 361 night withas many evils ( ifnot more ) as he had done the day As for that night, let darknef feize upon it. We. have heard of darknefs before ,_ darknefs upon theday. What doth fob mean here to call for darknefs upon the night ? The night is it felt full of darknefs, yea, darknefs is proper to the night. Is it any curie to fay, Let Wormwood be bitter ? or to fay, Let Lead be heavy ? The natural property of a thing cannot be thepuni¡hment of a thing. How is it then thatjob faith,Let that night be darknnefr, or Let darknefs feize upon it. Though it be true, that darknefs is proper to thenight, yet there are degrees of darknefs , and every darknefs is not proper to the night. The word here ufed for darknefs, is obferved by Gram- marians,to fignifie an extraordinary thick darknefs , yea darknefs 1.7=1 2 joyned with tempeft : Let thick tempe[iuous darknefs feize upon, renebro eu or take hold of that night ; for the word fignifies,to grafp,or take turbo. Vulg. a thing in ones hands, let darknefs grafp it. Though the night be dark, yet it may be darker ; we call Come nights light nights, in comparifon of others. Note from this. God can make fuch a night,as that the former night ¡hall feem a day to it God can add darknefs to the darknefs of the night : God can add bitternefs to the bitternefs of Worm- wood, and make Lead moreheavy then Lead : There is no-man on earth in fo fad a condition , but he may be in a worfe. Art thou poor ? God can fend thee fuch poverty, as that thy former pover- ty was riches compared with this. Art thouweak and fick ? God can add more ficknefs, and make thee fo weak, that thy former ficknefs may be accountedhealth, and thy weaknefs frength,com- pared with this. In this fence darknefs feizeth upon the night.
