380 Vere 8: An Expofition upon the Booh.of J O B. Chap. 3. SancRius. exprefs fuch joyes or furrows then men are. For the clofe of this point,I lhall add the apprehenfign of a learn- cd Lxpofitor, who taking thofe words in this lafi. fenfe, as refe- ing to thole folemn mournings, yet conceives that the word Levi- athan-muí't ftand here in the letter ; not as if yob had any intend- ment to (peakof the fifh Leviathan, or to allude to tithing for Le- hr eaertarioni- viathan : but either becaufe Heathens in thofe execrations did in- bur iha rommu- yoke or provoke Leviathan, that is,the Devil : Or becaufe in thofe niterodhiben- foletnn tongs oflamentation, Leviathan was a word much ufed, fur, qua horn'. b iliafunt, qua?. or Leviathanwas the firfi word of fome of thofe lamenting fongs ; que hominibuo For in ,execrations, firange, uncouth, dreadful words were pur, retwnocter- pofely ufed, the more to ailed and aflonifh the hearers : Now roretn inc.ui_ there is no word more dreadful then Leviathan, whether we take viii,; laaquati- . tibur nihitau- It for that Sea monster the Whale, or for that Hell-monfier, the dim o horribi Devil. And fo the meaning is this ; Let them curfe it who curfe liarLeviathan. the day, who are ready to raite up Leviathan j that is, Let thofe San& in loc. mourners, who fing that moll paßïonate fong of mourning, which dicebcarmen it begins with or is entituled Leviathan. It isordinary amongus, atrr Le- vi:uhan, quern. to call fòr a fòng or to call a fong by the general fubjet matter of adr?odmn nut- it,or by the firfl word ofit. And fo many Books ofScripture have to cara noab' their names in the Hebrew from the finti word ; as the Bvok of QH fumpferunt Genefs, is called Berefith, or in the beginning : And Exodus , rumen de qùi- heeFe emu t h hu irjitua f , (that is, ) and thefe are the names becaufe both be- ftnt, tc.'ein. gin with thole words in the Hebrew. So the fong, which was the form of thofe Lamentations, might be called Leviathan, becaufe (faith this Author) it began with that word ; andhe alledgeth a proverbial tradition for it out of Mariana, which he had received for a Jew, that it was forbidden upon the Feali -day to raite up Leviathan; that is, they might not take up that execratory long which beginneth with Leviathan. I only prefent this opinion, becaufe it fuites with, and illuftrates the former notionof folemn mourning. Thus I have, with as much fpeed and clearnefs as I could, given you the meaningof thefe words. That which favours their feiife molt, whokeep to the word Leviathan, is, that this Book fpeaks afterward ofLeviathan, to thew the power of the Creator in that powerful Creature. And I find the very fame phrafe of railing or stirringup Leviathan ufed in that place, Chap. 41. io. None isfo fierce that dare 'fir (or ra ji) him up. The Hebrew word which . there we tranllateftir, in this third Chapter is tranflated, raife Le- viathan._
