il 17o Chap. 33. An Expefation upon the Book, of J Verf4. Solomon Chewing how man is difpofd ofwhen thefe tovo are fepa- rated by death, faith (Eccl: t 2.7e) Thenfhall the, dufl (that is,the r body ) returne to the earth ao it was, and-thefprrit. ( that is, the. foule )f19411 returne.toGod .who gave it. The body is the gift of God, but the body is not the breath ofGod , it is not fuch an immediate gift ofGod as the foule is ; when the body,of man wasmade at firli, God Cooke the dull of the earth and formed his bodyout of it, but when he gave him a foule, he breathed, that from hirmfelfe ; it was an immediate e e6tof Gods power, not dealing with, nor workingupoany prx-exilling_matter. The fpirit or foule of.manis purelyof God,folely of God. And hence we may inferre: Pint, Then the foule is not a- vapour, arifing from the crafts or temperament of thebody, as the lifeof a beafi is. `secondly, Then the foule of man is nor traduced from the parents in' generation, as many learned men affirme, .efpecially,t© eafe themfelvesof thole difficultiesabout the conveyance of ori- ginall fin or defilement into the foule. Thirdly, We may hence alfo inferre, then the foule is not corruptible ;. iris animmortall fubfiance. How- can that be cor-' ruptible or mortali, which hath its rife (as I may fay ) immedi- ately fromGod,or is breathed in' by the Almighty, who is alto- .echer incorruptible and immortal. And whereas there is a two- fold incorruptibility ; Firli, by divine Ordination, that is, God appoynts fuch a thing (hall not corrupt, and therefore it doth not ; fo the body of man in it's firfi creation was incorruptible , fore_ though it were in -it felfe corruptible, beingmade out of theN earth, yet by . the appoyntment of-God, if man had continued in his integrity he had not dyed. And therefore it is faid, By fn came death ; yea doubtleife if God mould command and ap- poyntthe meanefi worme that moves upon -the earth to live for, ever; or the moli fading flower that groweth out of the earth to fiourifb fOr.ever, both the one and the other would doe fo. Se- condly, there is an incorruptibility in fome things, not meerely by a lawor appoyntment of God, but as from that intrinfecall nature, which God hath bellowed upon them, and implanted in them. Thus the Angels are immortall, they have an incorruptible nature, and likewife the foule of man, being breathed from the Almighty, is in it's owne nature incorruptible ; it bathnaturally ne
