Chap. 3 3. An Expofitióñ upon the Bookof J o B. Verf. 13.. neffe, in Read of expe6ted eafe ? till weare quiet withGod, how can we hope that he fhould fend us quietnefs ? Thirdly, It is a foolifh thing to'ftrrve with God, becaufe by firiving with him in reference to any mifery that is upon us, we hinder our felves from taking comfort in any remainingmercy. Though God takes away many mercies, yet while life remaineth there is fomewhat of mercy remaining. When job was flrippedto his, skin , yet he had fomewhat left, which was aground of his bidingGod. The greatefl loofers have fomewhat left, they efcape at leaf+ (as job fayd he did at worfl, Chap: 19. 30. ) with the skinoftheir teeth. But while we ftrive withGod about the mercies wehave loft, we lode the comfort of all the mercieswe flill enjoy. And is it not extreatne folly to deprive our felves of what we have by com- plaining about what we have not ? Why doff thou ftrive ? Thus much from the etnphafis ofthe former part of the verfe,as 'tis put intoa chideing or reproving queflion, why daft thoufiriveaeainfi him ? From thelatter branch. Hegiveth not accoaot of anyofhis matters. Obferve. Firft , Thepower and dóminianofGod is abfolute. God is not fubjea to any reckonings with man whatfoever he doch. He that may doe what he will, and candoe nothingbut what is right, neither may nor canbe brought to any account for what he bath donee He that is unaccountable is absolute in power. Fúrther, God needs not give man any account, upon thefe three grounds. Firfl, He oweth noman any thing ; He bath re- ceived nothing of us, and if a manhash not received, he needeth not account. They that have any truft from mend are togive ac= count. But what hath God received from man ? Man receiveshis all fromGod. Why then Mould God give any account? Secondly, Confider, the Lordbath wronged no mm,, no" c'o he. He is inçnirely jufland righteous inall hiswayes ; -i not only cloth jull:things, but things are lint becaufe he Both ,h ,m.. Why should he give an account ofany of his matters, who n °ice Cher doch nor can doe any matter which i.s un'uft.
